Youssouf Fofana

Youssouf Fofana is a French-born professional footballer who plays for Ligue 1 club Monaco and the France national team. He plays as a midfielder.

He considered quitting football twice

Youssouf considered quitting football not only once but twice. In an interview, he revealed what led him to consider thinking about quitting. 

According to him, the first time, he thought he was in team B and hadn’t done his year with the national U17 team, so it was over. 

It wasn’t a sense of resignation, but they had to start finding something else. He added,

“When you are in the second to the last year of high school, you have to know what you want to do in life.” 

The second time was the year when he thought he was done. The DH under 19 coach would tell him, 

“One last season, if we miss out on promotion, I’ll leave you alone.”

Youssouf says now he doesn’t play to become a pro but plays for fun. 

He said to himself that he would quit and focus on his studies six months before the baccalaureate, but then he was noticed by Strasbourg and signed him in February 2017. 

Youssouf worked hard in the reserve team for a year and a half and landed his first contract with Strasbourg. 

During an interview, Youssouf expressed he got quite tearful when he landed his first contract with Strasbourg and thought the feeling of receiving an offer from a professional club was just wow. 

He was ready to sign anything and just said yes right away without even listening to what they were offering, he recalled. 

Now he is playing for Monaco. He says he will give him a chance to go as far as possible as long as his body carries him.

Though Didier Drogba didn’t play in his position, he was his inspiration while growing up. 

He said he has Ivory coast roots and that Drogba was a national hero because of everything he achieved in his career.

Youssouf does what he can’t do on weekdays. He goes out for walks and explores cities. He likes to get out of his routine when he has days off. 

Youssouf is also into series and films. Prison Break, Game of Thrones, and Peaky Blinders are some of his favorite series. 

Talking about music, he likes rap, but he also listens to Afro, Pop, and also Hispanic players’ sounds.

The most important people in his life are his parents

Youssouf keeps his family first. His parents are the most important people in his life. He says his parents are so far removed from the world he lives in. 

They make him leave the footballer image outside when he gets home because they see him as their son, not as a player.

Football is, first and foremost, about enjoyment for Youssouf

Youssouf started playing football at the age of five, but he played it as a hobby until he realized it was a job, not a hobby, after he joined the national training center at age 13. 

He confessed to having understood the elite-level sport around 16 or 17. Then he went to the Paris area to work and made it his job. 

But football is still about enjoyment, first and foremost, he says.
