At 14, Alphonso joined the residency program at MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps FC. A year later, he made his debut and became the youngest player to sign a USL contract at 15 years, three months before he made his professional debut for the club at 15 years five months.
While in Vancouver, he excelled and was named MLS all-star and caught the eye of big clubs. In January 2019, he joined Bundesliga club Bayern Munich.
Alphonso officially became a Canadian citizen in June 2017 and became eligible for the Canadian national team.

When Alphonso's manager Nick informed that Vancouver wanted to sign him to play on the junior team, Victoria was reluctant to send him because he was only 14 and too young.
