Valerie Morris

Valerie Morris is a Jamaican-born dancer and model mainly recognized as the mother of Supermodel Naomi Campbell. 

Her parents, a seamstress, and a carpenter, moved to the UK from Jamaica in the 1950s. 

Morris started her modeling career after her career as a dancer in the troupe Exotica.

Her daughter has never met her biological father

Morris was just 19 years old when she gave birth to Naomi. 

She never let her daughter know about her biological father, who abandoned her and their unborn child while she was four months pregnant. 

So as she wished, Naomi never met her biological father. Naomi took the surname “Campbell” from her stepfather. 

She considers French–based Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaia as her ‘papa’ and also record producers Quincy Jones and Chris Blackwell as adopted father figures.

As a single mom, sacrifices had to be made. 

According to Morris, it was tough as she had to grow up quickly, but she never questioned whether she would keep her baby. 

She had created a life and had to look after her to the best of her ability. Life is precious, she said in an interview with YOU magazine. 

When her daughter Naomi was young, she spent her early career as a dancer in Rome, and after they returned to London, she left Naomi to live with her relatives as she had to travel across Europe with the dance troupe Fantastica. 

Naomi credits her grandmother, Ruby Morris, for teaching her how to cook and clean from an early age. 

She became a grandmom at the age of 70

In May 2021, her daughter Naomi via Instagram announced that she had become a mom sharing a sweet picture of the baby’s tiny feet in her hand. 

Morris congratulated her daughter by reposting the photo she shared and expressed that she is beyond thrilled as she has waited a long time to become a grandmother. 

Her daughter gave birth at the age of 50 and made her grandmom at the age of 70.

Naomi, during an interview with Vogue, where she posed with a newborn baby in February 2021, confirmed that her baby wasn’t adopted. 

She also said that only a handful of people knew about her pregnancy and that giving birth to her daughter was the biggest thing she had ever done. 

Naomi has yet to reveal her daughter's name as she calls her “little bean.”

She is a cancer survivor 

In 2005, Morris discovered a lump on her breast while she was taking a shower, so she consulted with her GP, who suggested she have a biopsy. 

Valerie recalled the day when she was shocked to the core hearing her diagnosis with advance breast cancer. 

She went by herself for the biopsy but took her sister Yvonne to take the results, and when the doctor informed her that she was advanced, Morris felt like the doctor was talking to someone else because she had a clear mammogram a year earlier. 

It was shocking for her. She was referred to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London for six months, where she underwent a mastectomy on her right breast. 

Morris did not opt for reconstructive surgery. Instead, she wears a prosthesis. 

She said it could have meant putting on a lot of weight so they could transfer it from her stomach in a nine-hour operation.

She also has a son

Morris also has a son named Pierre, 36, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Cliff Blackwood, a minicab driver with whom she was briefly married in the 80s. 

She was also once linked to the 11th Duke of Northumberland. But she is currently single and lives alone in Surrey. 

Her daughter says she taught her how to walk

Her relationship with her daughter is amazing. The mother-daughter duo appeared together in Burberry’s Christmas campaign back in 2018. 

In a video titled “My relation With My Mother” that came after the campaign, Naomi said she is proud of her mother and where she stands today is all because of her. 

While Morris said, she never thought she would do a Burberry campaign. 

Naomi said she was happy when Ricardo asked her to shoot the Burberry Christmas campaign, more so when he asked her to shoot with her mother. 

She expressed that her mother taught her how to walk, explaining it wasn’t that she didn’t know how to walk, but she taught her how to have a bit more swag and how to listen to the rhythm of the music and how to walk when there wouldn’t be music at all, and to remember the clothing that she is wearing.
