Stockard Channing is an American-born Emmy award-winning actress notable for her role as Betty Rizzo in the movie Grease and First Lady Abbey Bartlet in the NBC television series The West Wing.
Channing was born Susan Stockard.
Stockard Channing is her amalgamated name which she kept after her first divorce from her then-spouse, Walter Channing Jr.
When did she realize she wanted to pursue her career as an actress?
Channing, in an interview with Broadway World, recalled the moment when she realized acting was what she wanted to do.
According to her, she was 19 years and was in her junior year at Harvard University when a guy named Tim Muir, who was considered the wunderkind of their generation, cast her for some unknown reason.
She came out in the light and sang Pirate Jenny, and that was the very first time she experienced something incredible in her life, which was crazy and mysterious, she recalled.
She knew that everything in her brain, in her creative side and her emotions, she somehow was able to make up that person and sing that incredible song and know what she was talking about, which should have nothing to do with her (Channing) past experiences.
That particular moment was very mysterious, and it was irresistible, and that was it.
She has been married and divorced four times
Channing has been married and divorced four times. She was first married to Walter Channing Jr., a wood sculptor, winemaker, and venture capitalist, in 1963.
Their marriage could not last long as they divorced four years later in 1967.
She then married American translator, poet, and essayist, Paul Schmidt in 1970 but later divorced in 1976.
Both of her ex-husbands are no more in this world. Channing’s third husband was an American writer and former producer, David Debin, whom she married from 1976 until 1980.
Her fourth husband was businessman David Rawle with whom she was in a marital relationship for eight years from 1980 to 1988.
She was in a long–term relationship with late cinematographer Daniel Gillham
Channing was in a long-term relationship with late cinematographer Daniel Gillham whom she met on the set of “A time of Destiny” in 1988.
They started dating in the 90s.
In an interview with Guardian in 2006, she talked about her marriages and divorces, where she said nobody gets married to get divorced and that she doesn’t think she will get married ever again after her four divorces.
She revealed she has been living with Gillham for over two decades, so that it would feel quite silly.
The couple was living together until his death in May 2014. Gillham was the ever-lasting love of Canning.
She does not have kids
Though she has been married and divorced four times and was in a long-term relationship with Gillham, she never became a mom.
Will Smith revealed falling in love with Channing during the shoot of Six Degrees of Separation
Will Smith, in his new Memoir “Will,” revealed how he fell in love with Channing during the shooting of the 1993 movie Six Degrees of Separation, which was one-sided though.
Smith was in his first marriage at the time.
As per the experts obtained by People before it went on sale, Smith wrote he and his wife Sheree were in the first few months of their marriage with a brand new baby boy, and for Sheree, he can imagine that experience was unsettling, to say the least.
He said his wife had married a guy named Will Smith, and now she was living with a guy named Paul Poitier, his character name in the movie.
And to make the matter worse, during the shooting, he fell in love with Stockard Channing, he further expressed.
After the film wrapped, Smith, along with his then-wife Sheree and son Trey moved to Los Angeles, but their marriage was off to a rocky start as he could not erase Channing from his mind.
He found himself yearning to see and speak to Stockard.
Back in 2015, during an interview with Esquire, he said he got a taste early of the dangers of going too far for a character with Six Degrees of Separation.
His character was in love with Stockard's character, but he ended up falling in love in real with Stockard, he expressed.
