Sonya Curry

Sonya Curry is an American educator widely recognized as the mother of seven-time NBA all-star Stephen Curry. 

Sonya was born to her parents, Cleive Ester Adams and Candy Adams, in Radford, Virginia. 

She grew up alongside her two siblings Cleive Adams Junior and India Adams, in an African-American community. 

Her brother Cleive works for the Averett University team as a football head coach. Sonya is a former volleyball player.

The racism she experienced and how sports helped her avoid it

Sonya grew up in poverty, followed by extreme racism. At the age of 11, she witnessed a Klansman setting a cross on fire. 

At the time, she was working as a scorekeeper for the women’s softball league at Radford, where her mother was also a part of the team playing against the white team. 

Before the game could start, one of the members Ku Klux Klan suddenly set a cross on fire to make them run away but instead, her mother’s team made them run away, pulling them up with bats. 

Sonya was a sports enthusiast from an early age, and it was challenging for her to avoid racism in high school. 

According to her, she had to be the best to force them to play with her. 

Because she was the best at sports, she was accepted by Virginia Tech as a student-athlete, where she played volleyball leading the team to win several accolades. 

She was the first college student in her family.

She met her future husband in College

Sonya met her future husband, Dell Curry, at Virginia Tech, where both of them played volleyball. Dell is a former professional basketball player. 

He played in the NBA from 1986 to 2002. They married in 1988. 

In 1995 Sonya and Dell founded the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman in Huntersville, North Carolina. 

They are currently residing in Charlotte, North Carolina.

She is influential in shaping her son’s NBA career

Sonya did not have an opportunity just to be a mom, and she had to be the support system and strength for her three children, sons Stephen and Seth Curry, and daughter Sydel Curry so that her husband could focus on his career. 

As an educator and a mom, she raised her children, reminding them of the important thing in life. 

She instilled in them the determination to never give up. 

She is influential in shaping not only Stephen’s but also her second son Seth Curry who is also an NBA player who is currently playing for the Brooklyn Nets. 

A complete disciplinarian

Sonya is a complete disciplinarian. 

While at Stephen’s first middle school basketball game, she did not allow him to play just because he denied doing the chores the night before. 

According to Sonya, they only work as a family if everybody does their part. It’s not her job to do everything every day. 

When Stephen was caught cursing during the playoff match, she asked him to wash his mouth with soap.
