Shani Van Mieghem

Shani van Mieghem is famous as a celebrity spouse of Belgian-born professional footballer Toby Alderweireld. 

He plays as a defender for the Belgian first division A club Royal Antwerp and the Belgium national team. Shani is also from Belgium. 

She is a dressage rider and has also been featured on the front cover of an equestrian magazine. 

Walked down the aisle with the man of her dream

Shani met Toby in Belgium when he was playing for Ajax in the Netherlands. 

They got married on 19 June 2015 in their native Belgium in a lavish ceremony before they jetted off to Bali, Indonesia, for their romantic honeymoon. 

The couple became parents for the first time by giving birth to their Ayla in September 2018 after Toby announced they were expecting their first child via his Instagram in May. 

They became parents for the second time by welcoming their son Jace in February 2020. 

The family returned to Antwerp after Toby signed a three-year contract with Royal Antwerp. They are currently residing in their dream home in Kapellen.

She finds riding wonderfully relaxing

Shani was six years old when her aunt took her to a riding school named “De Paddock” in Waasmunster, Belgium. 

She took lessons there and became more passionate about horses. 

She bought her own horse Sicilia Van Helle at the end of 2015 from Belgium friends at Notfshoeve training in Hoogerheide, Netherlands. 

Shani finds riding tremendously relaxing and challenging, and that is the reason why she makes an effort to try and ride almost every day. 

She says it allows her to have a bond with her horse, and by competing and constantly working toward the next show, the bond intensifies. 

Shani sold her horse Sicilia in 2021. She posted sweet memories with Sicilia wishing her the best via her TikTok account.

What is it like for Shani to be a wife of a professional athlete?

When asked if it’s difficult to live with a professional athlete, Shani said she had adjusted herself over the years. 

Sometimes you have to find a middle ground, she says. 

According to her, Pro athletes cannot always eat what they want and needs to ensure that they get enough rest in between workout and matches and that they are often away from home. 

So she is by herself quite a lot which she says is the flip side of the coin, but the other side makes it worth it. 

When Toby is not at home, she can ride even more, she added humorously. 

Shani gave up her beautician job, which she still misses because, as a wife of a player, it’s difficult to build a customer overseas, and also, they do not know how long they will stay in a place.

Shani says she and Toby try to keep their personal life private as much as possible, so people recognize her very rarely. 

At the club, everyone knows her, but it’s not like she gets recognized or approached on the street or anything like that. 

The reason behind her husband’s tattoos 

Toby is a fan of Tattoos. He has a tattoo of his hometown Antwerp Cathedral. 

He inked it because he was 15 when he left his family and his home and would not have missed that much if he had always been there. 

He recalled his father saying that being homesick would go away, and as his father said, it did go away, but he always missed Antwerp. 

Besides that, he also inked the names of his brothers, and if anyone asks if they will fight, he says that is never going to happen. 

His brothers mean a lot to him. 

Though they don’t see each other a lot, when they meet, then it’s instantly boom-boom-boom, he says. 

"Each day I come closer to the home where I was born" is the next tattoo he has inked, which, according to Toby, is the summary of his life story.
