Serita Jakes is happily married to her husband, Thomas Dexter Jakes Sr. who is known as T.D. Jakes. Her husband is a pastor, author, and filmmaker. They tied their knot in marriage on May 29, 1982. They were happily married for 37 years in 2019. On their 37th anniversary on May 29, and she posted a picture with her husband in Instagram with a caption,

They are blessed with five beautiful children. They have two daughters, Sarah and Cora, and three sons, Jermaine Jakes, Jamar, and Thomas Jr. Jamar and Jermaine, are twins. 

Only after six months of marriage, Serita Jakes and her husband Thomas Dexter Jakes Sr were in a horrific car accident in 1982. Serita Jakes had severe leg and foot injury in the accident, and the doctors even had doubts about whether she will be able to walk again or not. In that difficult time, her husband did not leave her side for once and did everything to make her recover from her injury. Thomas Dexter Jakes Sr said, 

“I prayed for her, I took care of her, I cooked for her, I washed her hair, I taught her how to walk – literally. I stood in front of her and said, ‘You can do this’, and taught her to walk again. It brought is together. We have an unexplainable connection… I guess, at the core, we’re friends.” 

But soon after her recovery, her husband had to go through back surgery in 2008, and at the same time, they had to bear the loss of their spiritual daughter, Paula White. They had to struggle with their illness and surgery at the same time, but they managed to overcome it and are living a healthy life now. 

Serita Jakes also said that she was ashamed of her body weight in an interview and has gone through weight loss and is more health-conscious now.
