Sergio Basteri is famous as the younger brother of Mexican singer Luis Miguel who mainly goes by his nickname El Sol de Mexico (The Sun of Mexico).

The sudden disappearance of his mother is still a mystery

Sergio was born to his parents, Luis Gallego Sanchez, commonly known as “Luisito Rey,” a Spanish singer, songwriter, and guitarist, and Marcela Basteri. 

In August 1986, when Sergio was barely two years old, his mom disappeared, and still, to date, her whereabouts are not known. It is still a mystery.

After his mother abandoned him, he was under the care of his father, Luisito, for some time, leaving him with his grandmother Dona Matilde Sanchez to be taken care of. 

After the death of his father in 1992 at the age of 47, Luis pledged the custody of then eight years old Sergio finding that his grandmother and his uncle Tito Gallego tried taking Sergio to show programs and castings, which he didn’t want. 

Luis won custody and took Sergio to stay with him and another brother Alejandro.

The relationship with his star brother Luis Miguel is yet to be mended

Luis Miguel was financially supporting Sergio until they had a disagreement, and it’s been more than two decades that the brothers were not on talking terms.

Sergio was against his brother’s wish, which was that his brother Luis wanted to buy a house in England for him and doctor Octavio to live in.

Still, he wished to continue his studies in the United States and go to school in Boston and attend Harvard Law School. 

Luis wanted Sergio to attend college in England. 

Soon after that, Luis cut off his financial support, after which Sergio went on his own, working as a waiter in a bar to earn a living.

Since he was financially unstable, he returned to Guadalajara with Octavio and started studying photography because he could not afford to finish school.

The father figure in his life

Dr. Octavio Fonterrada is the father figure in Sergio’s life who raised and took care of him. 

After Luis won custody, Sergio started spending more time with Octavio due to his brother’s constant tours, trips, and lack of time. 

During an interview with Ventaneando, Octavio recalled how he ended up staying with Sergio.

He said he started to discipline Sergio and take care of him after Luis asked Sergio to better listen to Doc due to his busy schedule. 

Since then, he has become a father figure to him. Sergio moved to Boston with Octavio, where he continued his studies.

After finishing school in Boston, Sergio considered studying Anthropology but later agreed to study law after talking to his family. 

According to Octavio, Luis told him that he wanted to buy a house in England to find him a university in England. 

Still, Sergio already had Boston College and Harvard to study law. He was about to enter Boston College or Harvard, but they had a clash. 

Both Sergio and Octavio returned to Guadalajara. Talking about Sergio, he said Sergio has always held on and gone out on his own. 

He defends himself and is a gentleman, a totally independent and very respectful person who always stays on the sidelines.

Is he married?

Sergio lives a low-key life out of the spotlight. 

When Dr. Octavio gave an interview in 2018, he was asked if Sergio was married or not, and Octavio said he was not married.
