Sem Smit rose to prominence as the girlfriend of Eredivisie club Ajax's captain, Steven Bergwijn. Bergwijn plays as a left winger or forward.

Smit and Bergwijn broke up for a while before they reconciled

Bergwijn and Smit broke up for a while before getting back together.

Bergwijn was dating dancer, model, and Instagram model, Chloe Jay when she and Bergwijn were having an affair. 

He had been dating Chloe since 2015 and had welcomed their only son Saint Stevie Isa Bergwijn in 2020. Soon after, Smit gave birth to their first child.

At the end of January, Bergwijn signed for Tottenham Hotspur after which Smit moved in with him in London. 

The couple parted ways in the summer of 2022 and unfollowed one another on Instagram after the rumors that Bergwijn had cheated circulated.

While talking about fatherhood, Bergwijn said he wants to be the same father as his father was for him.

Bergwin credits his success to his father Jurgen who has been his constant supporter and his biggest fan. 

In an interview with Players Tribune, he talked about the sacrifices his father and his family made for him. 

When he left Ajax at 13 to play for PSV, his dad became the only way he could get to Eindhoven to train with his new club. 

On every weekday, his father would wake up at 5:30 a.m., have his breakfast, and get in the car to drive him to the train in Eindhoven which was an hour and 45 minutes away. 

He would sleep in the car, sometimes in the parking lot while he was training. Then he would drive him to school. The same schedule continued for two years.

"Both of my parents did everything for me. I want to give the same", he expressed.

Bergwijn's career so far 

Born in Amsterdam to his incredibly supportive parents from Suriname, Bergwijn started playing football when he was around four or five years old. 

He had his first training at Waterwijk in Almore when he was four years old. 

After having played football at Waterwijk for three years, he went to Ajax's youth academy. 

However, at the tender age of 13, he chose to leave Ajax for PSV due to a conflict with one of the trainers. 

In an interview with Goal, he said it never became a problem for him to play far away from home because of his parents who always supported him and drove him to Eindhoven.

Bergwijn represented the Netherlands at the U-17 Euros in 2014 where he made it to the final. 

Many clubs were interested in signing him after that but he did not consider changing PSV stating that he was very young and also wanted to make it to the first team with PSV. 

In August 2014, he made his first team debut for Jong PSV in the second division playing against Achilles '29. 

He then joined Tottenham Hotspur at the end of January 2020. He scored his first goal in his Premier League debut in a 2-0 win over Manchester City.

On the 8th of July, 2022, he returned to Ajax signing a five-year contract with a transfer fee of €31.25 million, the most expensive transfer in the history of the Eredivisie. 

He scored a hattrick in a 6-1 win over Groningen. In August 2023, he became the captain of Ajax replacing the recently departing Dusan Tadic.
