Sebastian Berhalter is an American professional soccer player who is a midfielder at the Major League Soccer Club Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Who are his parents?

He is the son of Gregg Berhalter, an American soccer coach and a former player, and Rosalind Berhalter. 

His father was most recently the United State men’s national soccer team’s head coach.

His parents were college sweethearts. 

They first met in the fall of 1991 after they were introduced through their mutual friend, as both of them were on the college soccer team at the University of North Carolina. 

Both of them were 18 at the time. They married in 1999 after dating for several years. 

According to Sebastian, his parents have been very influential in his career. 

They have helped him throughout his career and stayed positive in him, and also pushed him in a good way. 

He says he can't thank them enough for all their sacrifices.

About his career

Sebastian started his youth career in 2012 with the Swedish club Hammarby IF where his father was a senior team manager. 

He joined the Columbus Crew Youth the following year. 

In 2019, he played 16 matches for the Tar Heels, a men's soccer team representing the University of North Carolina, and in January 2020 signed Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer. 

He made his professional debut in July, playing against FC Cincinnati during the MLS black tournament in Orlando, Florida. 

He was playing on a loan for Austin FC for the 2021 season before the club declined his contract the following year. 

He was traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on the 4th of February, 2022.

His father admitted to kicking his now-wife in the 1990s

The incident that took place three decades ago made a headline after Danielle Reyna, mother of Giovanni Reyna, contacted the U.S. Soccer Federation and revealed Berhalter kicked his then-girlfriend, now his current wife Rosalind, after an argument in 1991. 

Rosalind and Danielle were close friends and shared a room while at UNC. Rosalind had shared about Berhalter kicking her at the bar after a heated dispute. 

It was not known to the public until recently when Danielle made it public after the comments made about her son following the team's elimination from the 2022 World Cup frustrated her.

Later on the 3rd of January, 2023, Berhalter issued a statement via his Twitter admitting to kicking his now-wife back in 1991 after an argument. 

He also stated being blackmailed. According to him, the incident happened four months after they started dating in 1991. 

They had a heated argument while at the local bar one day that continued outside the bar, after which it turned out to be physical, and he kicked in her legs.

He further stated that he still regrets his shameful action and are zero excuses for his actions that night. 

"He immediately apologized to Rosalind, but understandably, she wanted nothing to do with him," he added. 

They patched up seven months later. 

He further expressed that the lesson he learned from that night over three decades later became the foundation for a loving, devoted, and supportive relationship which they honored and celebrated with their 25th wedding anniversary this past weekend.

Danielle admitted to revealing his past contacting the U.S. Soccer but denied blackmailing Berhalter.
