Included in the final World Cup squad despite the pressure from the government not to include him

Iran national team manager Carlos Queiroz included Azmoun in the final World Cup squad despite the pressure from the government not to pick him.

The Iranian government had pressurized not to include him after he put his word forward supporting the protests over Masha Amini’s death.

As per the Iranian FA instructions, players were forbidden to speak out over the death of 22-year-old woman Masha Amini, but Azmoun didn’t comply with the rules.

22-year-old Masha Amini was arrested for not wearing a hijab in September. She later died in police custody

As per the sources and eyewitnesses, she was brutally beaten by the police. However, the police claimed that Amini suffered a heart attack, after which she fell into a coma.

After the death of Amini, mass protests followed, where 304 protestors lost their lives to violent crackdowns from the police force.

Azmoun took his Instagram to speak out in support of the woman. He wrote that, at worst, he would be dismissed from the national team, but it doesn’t matter if they did so.

He would sacrifice that for one hair on the heads of Iranian women. However, Queiroz went against the government’s will and selected Azmoun.

He announced his retirement after the harsh criticism of him affected his mother’s health

Azmoun announced his retirement after he faced heavy criticism following Iran’s 2018 World Cup exit.

The criticisms over his performance caused his mother’s health to worsen, and he chose his mom over his career.

In his social media post, he announced his decision to say goodbye to the national team though it’s one of the most painful and significant life decisions for him, the youth of 23 who faced great hardship to get in there.

He further stated that his mother had overcome an illness but unfortunately, due to the unkindness of some people and the insults he and his teammates in no way deserved, her illness became severe, which unfortunately put him in a position where he was bound to pick one or the other.

He picked his mother.

He returned to the national team in October of that year and was called up by Carlos Queiroz in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
