He gave up football, cricket, and everything and was partying non-stop. But his mom’s last words to him, which he took by heart, inspired him to follow his career path.
He said about a day or two before she died, she woke up and looked at him and said,
“Graham, you have a special talent in life, go make the most of it. Don’t be bum like your mates”.
He added,
They were the last words she ever said to me. She knew I was going out and doing all this partying. She was like: You’re better than that, you’ve got this talent, go and use it.
It was her husband’s brave move that led his team to secure their spot in World Cup.
Graham‘s brave move to replace the captain and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan with Andrew Redmayne for the penalty shootout against Peru led the team to secure their fifth consecutive World Cup.
Talking to ABC News (Australia), Graham revealed the reason behind his bold move.
He said he learned how substitution just before the end of the game could mentally affect the opposition or the penalty takers of the opposition, leaving them to wonder why they would do that.
When you are changing the goalkeeper in a minute to go or two minutes to go, they are probably asking the question, “why”? Mentally.
