James was born on January 9, 1987, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to his parents, Tim Mauney and Lynne Mauney.

Going through financial problems in the initial days
Mauney revealed in one of his interviews that he had to work on ball bearing plan while he was giving continuity to bull riding.
He said that when a bull stomped him in his stomach, last raved his liver, and broke all his ribs on the right side, it almost killed him, and his family didn’t have the money to pay his bills and everything, so he had to get the job.
He said that when he got called from Portland, Oregon, for his first PBR, he had just got off work at the ball bearing plan, and he bought a plane ticket and spent every bit of money he had in his bank account at that time to buy that plane ticket to get that board out.
After then, he won one hundred and sixteen thousand dollars, and he made a next call to his boss at the ball bearing plant that he was never coming back.
Bloodline runs in the family too, but not only in Bulls, as per J.B. Mauney.
James' grandfather Catfish was a baseball player. He had issues with his legs as he had lost his legs which eliminated the playing days.
Besides this incident, he didn’t quit playing baseball, just like the same thing happened with James.
In 2012 PBR, J.B. had to ride with his right hand down. He had an injury in his left hand, so he had to ride with the opposite hand.
Besides such an incident, he came up with 89 points on RMEF Gunpowder, which led to taking second place in PBR 15/15 bucking battle in billings.
James said in an interview that anytime somebody tells him he can’t do something, he’s going to try everything he can to do it, and he feels like that’s the way how his grandfather was.
