Rudy Bourgarel

Rudy Bourgarel is the proud father of Rudy Gobert, a French basketball player of the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association and the French national basketball team.

Failed marriage

Bourgarel was married to Corinne Gobert, a French-born a long time back, but their marriage could not last long. 

They ended up with a divorce when Gobert was just three years old. After his divorce, he moved to Guadeloupe, leaving his wife and children in Saint-Quentin. 

Bourgarel is still residing in Guadeloupe.

His ex-wife did not stop his son from talking to or seeing his father.

After the divorce, she became the single mother of her three children, out of which two of them were from her previous relationship. 

She worked as a hairdresser to raise her three kids. As a mother, she did not let her divorce affect the relationship between a father and a son. 

She allowed her son to talk to his father once a week. 

According to Gobert, his mother would buy tickets once in three years to visit his father and other members in Guadeloupe.

A dream that was shattered

Bourgarel was a French basketball player. He played for Marist College from 1985 to 1988. 

He always dreamt of playing for the NBA, but his dream was shattered as he was not drafted by the NBA despite his hard work. 

Having to accept not getting an opportunity in the NBA to prove himself became painful for him for his entire life. 

According to former NBA swingman Tariq Abdul-Wahad, the clubs he played for in France never respected him as a player and never made him feel welcomed. 

Though he was a sensational player for others, his clubs were unfair to him. 

After his dream was seized, he lost interest in playing and chose to remain out of the spotlight.

His son is living his unfulfilled dream.

Gobert feels that he is living his father’s unfulfilled dream of playing for the NBA and seeing how proud his father is watching him on television. 

He also shared that he was carrying his father’s dream that his father was unable to fulfill.

He was the first NBA player to be tested positive for Coronavirus.

Gobert tested positive for Coronavirus on 11th March 2020. He became the first NBA player to have tested positive for the virus. 

The NBA 2019-20 season was suspended due to the reason. It affected him not only physically but also mentally. 

He was being blamed and threatened, and the whole world was judging him at the same time. 

The video of him touching microphones within his reach seemed like teasing the coronavirus two days before the test. 

The video went viral across the globe, making him the target of criticism. However, as per Gobert, it was just to lighten the mood, and he later apologized.
