His parents parted ways after 27 years of marriage and 34 years as a couple

His parents, Bill Gates and Melinda, first met in 1987 after Melinda started working at Microsoft. 

After dating for seven years, they got married on the 1st of January, 1994, on the Hawaii Island of Lanai. 

They were together for 34 years and married for 27 years before they announced their separation in 2021. 

The news was a major shock to everyone. Though they are now no longer together they are together working for their foundation.

Melinda proudly said that she gave every single piece of herself to her marriage while appearing on CBS Morning to talk about her divorce and her healing process back in 2022. 

According to her, she never thought she would end up getting divorced when she got married to the love of her life, but unfortunately, she felt like she needed to take a different route. 

She also talked about Bill’s past affair during their marriage, which Bill himself admitted in 2021. 

“I certainly believe in forgiveness, so I thought we have worked through some of that,” she said. 

It wasn’t one moment or one specific thing that happened but there just came a point in time where she had had enough where she realized that it wasn’t just healthy and she no longer could trust what they had.

When she was asked if the report about Bill’s multiple affairs was true, she replied by saying that those are the questions that Bill needs to answer. 

There is not only one thing that led to the end of their marriage but multiple things, including Bill’s meeting with Jeffrey Epstein, she said. 

She revealed meeting Epstein but then regretting it from the second she stepped in the door. She described him to be vile and evil personified. 

Going through divorce, especially when it’s public, most of the women feel ashamed and often question themselves if it was their fault, but she said she doesn’t question herself at all now. 

She gave every single piece of herself to her marriage to Bill. She was committed to it from the day she got engaged until the day they got out of it.

He is a feminist 

Rory is a feminist, and his mother is very proud of him. 

His mother wrote a heartfelt essay for TIME on the occasion of his 18th birthday back in 2017, where she shared how she raised him as a feminist. 

In the essay, she described him to be compassionate and curious, intelligent, well-read, and deeply informed about the wide range of issues that interest him. 

According to her, Rory has always demonstrated his belief that gender equality is something worth standing for, and whenever they raise all those issues at the dining table, he and his friends have a lot to say. 

She also recalled the moment when she and he made a trip to East Africa to see some of the work that their foundation was doing. 

While there, they met a group of men who were working to shift their gender norms in the community. 

She was impressed to hear that they were trying to persuade other village men to share household chores, co-manage their finances, and make bold decisions together. 

She thought they were doing extraordinary but Rory disagreed on sharing his point of view. 

He told her that standing up to unfair norms is nothing more than exactly what men everywhere should be doing.

He has two sisters

Rory is the middle child of his parents. 

He is blessed with two sisters, an elder sister, Jennifer Katherine Gates, born in 1966, and a younger sister, Phoebe Adele, born in 2002. 

Jennifer has described herself to be an equestrian on her Instagram bio. She has been happily married to fellow equestrian Nayel Nassar since October 2021.

Rory is also an uncle. He became an uncle after her sister Jennifer and her husband welcomed their daughter in March 2023.

His father, who is one of the richest men on the planet, said that he is leaving all of his money into his foundation when he departs from this world.

While appearing on This Morning back in 2017, he shared the reason behind not leaving his fortune to his children. 

He said that his children would receive a great education and some money so that they would never be poorly off, but they would go out and have their careers. 

”It’s not a favor to kids to have them have huge sums of wealth because it distorts anything they might do creating their path, and this money is dedicated to helping the poorest,” he added. 

He also said that his children know about it and are proud of it and that they go on a trip with them to see the work that’s been done.
