At the time, he was a member of the improvisational comedy troupe while his future wife, Dillon, was working as the coat check girl for the theater.

From their marriage union, they gave birth to their only son Richard Libertini Jr

After their marriage, she kept her acting career aside to give her full attention to marriage.

Dillon, in an interview with The Times, described that stay-at-home stint to be suffocating. She also suffered two miscarriages

She said she was offered a lot of shows, but she didn’t do, including musicals, part of Eve in “Applause," and ”Beekman Place” and that Irwin Shaw even wrote a play for her, but she refused because she didn’t want to.

At the time, she wasn’t ready for a career and wanted to be protected and married, she added.

She got into acting after she realized being a housewife was not what she wanted to do. However, the couple got divorced in 1978

In the past, he had always concealed himself under layers of character.

His early days and career

He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Italian Immigrants.

He earned a bachelor's degree From Emerson College in Boston before he moved to New York City and Chicago

He then moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s to pursue his career in acting. For a long time, most of his work was off-Broadway.

During an interview with New York Times in 1982, he said he mainly did stuff he helped to originate during the early part of his career and was secretly afraid of acting someone else’s words.

He was afraid he would bump into the furniture and would not know where to stand.

His first film role was in Catch-22, but his biggest breakthrough came with “The In-Laws” in 1979.

While talking about material success at the time, he had said he wished he had his own house, but he genuinely enjoyed what he got saying he was living the life of an actor.

Dillon’s parents divorced when she was quite young, and she spent her youth mostly moving from place to place with her mother and step-father, an Army Veteran.

She was 16 when she left home. She started her career as an improvisational comedian and stage actress.

In an interview with New York Times, Dillon expressed that she went for treatment for mental illness after that.

According to her, she went crazy when she was doing Virginia Wolf because she was called in to do many, many times as the play was so long and the actors union would not let them play the matinee.

They had to have a whole different cast for that because the girl would get sick. She would do it for three hours in the afternoon, then study with Lee Strasberg for two hours, and do the play for three hours at night.

After getting out of the hospital, she was honored with two Oscar nominations for her outstanding performance in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Absence of Malice.”

She then went on to land one of her most notable roles in 1983’sA Christmas Story.” Besides that, she is credited with a number of films. She retired from her acting career in 2007.
