Richard Libertini was an American stage, film, and television actor also famous as the ex-husband of film and television actress Melinda Dillon.

Libertini was married to Dillon in 1963, whom he met during his stint at Second City Company.
At the time, he was a member of the improvisational comedy troupe while his future wife, Dillon, was working as the coat check girl for the theater.

His early days and career
He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Italian Immigrants.
He earned a bachelor's degree From Emerson College in Boston before he moved to New York City and Chicago.
He then moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s to pursue his career in acting. For a long time, most of his work was off-Broadway.
During an interview with New York Times in 1982, he said he mainly did stuff he helped to originate during the early part of his career and was secretly afraid of acting someone else’s words.
He was afraid he would bump into the furniture and would not know where to stand.
His first film role was in Catch-22, but his biggest breakthrough came with “The In-Laws” in 1979.
While talking about material success at the time, he had said he wished he had his own house, but he genuinely enjoyed what he got saying he was living the life of an actor.

Libertini was diagnosed with Cancer in 2014. He was battling cancer until his death in 2016 at his home in Venice, California. He was 82.

According to her, she went crazy when she was doing Virginia Wolf because she was called in to do many, many times as the play was so long and the actors union would not let them play the matinee.
They had to have a whole different cast for that because the girl would get sick. She would do it for three hours in the afternoon, then study with Lee Strasberg for two hours, and do the play for three hours at night.
After getting out of the hospital, she was honored with two Oscar nominations for her outstanding performance in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Absence of Malice.”
She then went on to land one of her most notable roles in 1983’s “A Christmas Story.” Besides that, she is credited with a number of films. She retired from her acting career in 2007.
