About his career

Born and raised in a small town in Dresden, Tennessee, the biggest thing for him was being able to play sports, basketball, football, and baseball, but when he moved to Murray State, he had to pick one among those sports, so he picked basketball.

It just started from there. He kept getting better and better at the sport and got drafted by the Houston Rockets in the second round of the 1992 NBA draft.

He went to Houston after the draft. He went to Italy in his rookie year and played over there, and then the Dallas Mavericks traded for his rights and came back.

The reason he went to Dallas was it was in a rebuild mode, he was young, and it was the perfect place.

After playing for 11 years in the NBA, he decided to go into coaching, something he always loved, and he knew how much work had to go into that coaching.

He started as a player development coach with the Dallas Mavericks.

Before the Denver Nuggets, he worked as an assistant coach for the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, Indiana Pacers, and Philadelphia 76ers.

His brothers influenced him in his basketball career

Popeye, in an interview, said it was his brothers who influenced him in his basketball career.

His brothers were much better athletes than him. His oldest brother Tony, who is no more in this world, was a high school quarterback in Dresden

His other brother, David, who is two and a year half years older than him, was an elite athlete.

Popeye also had a much older brother, James, who also passed away several years back.

How did he get his nickname?

Popeye was born Ronald Jones, but he has been known by his nickname since he was a newborn infant.

Popeye, in a podcast, said the information that his nickname was given by his mother or his brother David is wrong.

He cleared that it was neither his mother nor his brother David who gave him the nickname.

Still, it was his much older brother James, nicknamed Bobo, who gave him the name from the cartoon character Popeye because the cartoon was playing when he was brought home from the hospital.

Who is his wife?

He is currently married to a woman named Kelsey Jones. They exchanged wedding vows in April 2017

Popeye posted pictures of his big day on April 8, 2017, with the caption, "Best day ever."

He also uploaded pictures of his friends and family who were present to celebrate their big day.

It seems like they got engaged on April 13, 2016, as Popeye posted a picture of him with Kelsey where she is seen flaunting the engagement rings and captioned, "She said YES. #futurewifey."

On April 1, 2017, Popeye posted a picture of their engagement rings and captioned, "Greatest weekend of my life."

They made their relationship public with an Instagram post by Popeye on October 25, 2015, with the caption Fun night with the lady.

He is the father of four

Popeye is the father of four children, and all of them are boys. He shares three sons, Justin, Seth, and Caleb, with his ex-wife.

His two sons, Seth and Caleb, are professional hockey players. He has a four-year-old son with his now wife.

Popeye said his thing as a father was always to let his kids try as many sports as they wanted to try.

His sons, according to him, had played Lacrosse, soccer, basketball, baseball, and football, but it was something about when they found hockey.

Popeye was sort of reluctant initially.

He used to tell them it was summertime and to put away hockey and try something else like basketball and football, but they would look at him as if he was crazy.

All three of them stuck with it. They would tell him they wanted to go to the rink and skate and play hockey.

He admitted to asking Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Sakic for advice because he saw his son's passion and interest in the sport.

He said Sakic asked him to teach the boys skating, so he and his then-wife searched for the best skating instructors around and enrolled them in classes.

His ex-wife is white

His ex-wife, Amy Jones, who is the mother of his three sons, is white, so their kids are biracial.

Popeye and his then-wife had a discussion with their kids, and they knew what it was, but he shielded them from racism so they never had to deal with it.

He and his then-wife used to always tell them to treat people the way they wanted to be treated, that they were special, and to embrace the white society but also to embrace the black side, he said.

He also said that his sons understand both white as well as black history and what happened to Black people with slavery.

Net Worth

His net worth is estimated to be around $5 million.

Age

  1. He was born on the 17th of June 1970 in Dresden, Tennessee, United States. He is currently 53 years old.
