His parents 

The middleweight title contender was born on 21st April 1991 to his parents Carlos Roberto and Maria Augusta. 

He has an elder brother, Carlos Costa, who is a former mixed martial artist. He had a rough childhood and got into many physical confrontations due to his street fights. 

At the age of 9, he began his Muay Thai training when his mother agreed to let him train after discovering a discipline and self-control associated with martial arts. 

His father died of throat cancer when he was 17.  To financially support his mother after his father's death, he worked in a real estate and IT School as a teacher. 

From his mother's financial aid, Costa gave up his teaching to focus on full time mixed martial artist.

Paulo was suspended from August 2018 to February 2019

Paulo was suspended by the USADA for prohibited use of an intravenous infusion (IV) twice in 2017. Costa's elder brother was also equally involved in this. 

Recently, USADA has suspended the Brazilian doctor for violating the USADA Anti-doping policy. He was responsible for the failed Drug test of Paulo Costa.

Starting his career on the regional circuits of Brazil and eventually to the UFC with just 13 fights, he has established himself as one of the top middleweight in the UFC with a perfect 13-02 providing him the potential megastar.
