Her first marriage to a comedian was a failure

Southall married comedian Martin Lawrence in 1995 after dating on and off for three years.

She first met Lawrence in 1992 while she was working in Gov. Douglas Wilder's media office.

In an interview, Southall said they never thought they would ever end up marrying because they were like oil and water.

She was interested in him because he was a comedian and cracked her up, but the way he came out on her afterward wasn't cool, she said.

They were re-connected by Lawrence's brother and stayed connected because of them.

After she moved to Los Angeles, they both started dealing with the pressure of the industry and both of them were very young and naive.

It was not a constructive relationship and marriage.

Southall was 25 when she packed her suitcase and left on her own with her nine-month-old daughter.

While appearing on Good Morning America, she said she just knew that it was no longer healthy for any of them.

When she packed the suitcase, she didn't know she was leaving for divorce but thought that was the best thing for the moment. To her, marriage was forever.

Till her mother passed away, her parents were married for 30 years and her grandparents for 60 years, so when she was leaving, she thought of shame and was hurt and scared at the same time, she added.

Southall and Lawrence got divorced in 1997.

How did she meet her current husband?

Southall met her current husband while she was on vacation. At the time, she was also taking help from a therapist to get away from her divorce.

According to her, she had promised her therapist that she would not take anyone's number, but then she had a great time with Emmitt, so she asked for his number instead.

The couple later married on the 22nd of April, 2000.

Southall and Smith say they try to maintain the sense of who they are and be as normal as possible, especially with their kids.

Emmitt said when it comes to family, everything is off-limits. He said,

"The thing is, you just try to be involved in your kids' activities as much as possible so they can have a normal life. They didn't ask for all the celebrity aspects of who their father and mother may be. They want normalcy."

Pat announced her separation from her husband

Back in August 2020, Southall took her Instagram to announce that she and her husband have decided to call it quits.

She wrote she and Smith, after much contemplation and prayer, have decided to separate and that they will continue to move forward with love and compassion for one another as co-parents and friends and work together in the best interest of their children, their family, community, and businesses.

However, it is not yet known if they have finalized their divorce.
