Paco Lopez

Paco Lopez, born Francisco Jose “paco” Lopez Fernandez, is a Spanish professional football manager who is the current manager of Levante UD. 

Paco, who played as a forward during his playing career, retired at the age of 34. His playing career ended without playing for La Liga.

His wife recovered from a serious illness

Paco has been married to his wife for a very long time. He shares a son with his spouse. 

For Paco, his family, who is residing in Valencia, is his priority. His wife was suffering from a serious illness. 

She was recovering from the illness in the summer of 2017. Since she was in her recovery state, he had decided to continue his training close to Valencia to be close to his family. 

His managerial career so far

After a year of his retirement, he began his coaching career in Villarreal’s youth academy. 

In the same year, he coached a regional under-13 team and helped the team to become champions. 

During the time, he was also working as an assistant manager at Villarreal B, which was in the Tercera division. 

A year after, he spent his three-season at Catarroja CF in the Tercera division. The club finished in the play-offs for promotion. 

He then coached in Segunda B at Benidorm, followed by Alcoyano in the Tercera division but was dismissed after falling downward from 1st to 4th in only five matches. 

He had a brief stint in Segunda with Cartagena. After Cartagena, he took over Valencia B teams and later spent four seasons at Villarreal, followed by another reserve team of Levante UD (Levante B) in the Tercera division. He was appointed the manager of Levante in March 2018.

First Laliga coaching experience at the age of 50

After years of coaching experience at the second and the third divisions, Lopez finally was appointed at LaLiga at 50, replacing Juan Muniz. 

With only four games directed in the second division with Cartagena, he was questioned about his lacking experience in the elite club initially. 

But according to him, the work is what matters the most and should be focused on that though the responsibilities will be different. 

It is just that work will be practically the same with added responsibilities. 

He proved it in just nine matches, getting 22 points with one defeat more than the double before his arrival. 

In his first season in charge, the club enjoyed the 5-4 victory over Barcelona. To date, he has won two of his seven La Liga matches against Barcelona.

He has the qualities to bring his players right back on the track even after a difficult situation

In his three seasons at the helm of the Levante UD, Lopez has completely transitioned the club, the club which was once close to relegation before his arrival. 

He believes in being an educator more than a coach, which helps in the growth and improvement of the players in all aspects of their lives. 

Recently Levante experienced a memorable draw with Real Madrid where the Levante team was running for dear life ahead of half-time. 

Still, after the half-time, they stunned everyone with an incredible performance, ending with a draw 3-3. 

To bring his players on the track, he convinced his players by telling them how they could fight back despite being in a difficult situation through correcting two things with the same daring attitude. 

It was not the first time with Real Madrid. In the last season, Levante beat four out of the top six and a draw with Barcelona.
