Otto Addo

Otto Addo is a retired Ghanian-German professional footballer and a manager who is currently the head coach of the Ghana national football team.

Addo was born in Hamburg, West Germany, to his Ghanaian parents, Ebenezer Awuku Addo and Naomi Amiokor Ntreh, who are from Bubiashie, a town in Accra, Ghana. 

His mother, Naomi, is no more in this world. 

He is married and has children

Many may be wondering if Addo is married or not. He is married and has a family. During an interview, he admitted his family life had been affected by football life. 

Though it’s challenging for him, he tries to ensure quality time with his family.

He said that it’s manageable and that he has a contract until after the World Cup, a ten days trip in September, and then prepare for the World Cup, and then the tournament is on the agenda. 

He added coming from a completely different base in terms of that, and he was home once a week during his year and a half in Denmark.

He added that he spent a maximum of once a week and more like two weeks with family during his first year in Monchengladbach. 

He admitted that family life is always challenging, especially when you have children, but he is not the only coach to know that. 

After Ghana qualified for the World Cup, he expressed his gratitude via Instagram, mentioning his wife Gloria for being his rock.

Since there is no wedding news or pictures on the internet, his wedding was private.

Addo is a very private person, but he is a married man. It is not known if he dated anyone before his marriage.

His experience as a player and a manager

Addo says he didn’t score too often and was given more on giving assists. He was not a goal shooter but was good at dribbling one against one. 

He played for Borussia Dortmund for six years from 1999 to 2005 after having played for Vfl 93 Hamburg and Hannover 96.

During his time at the club, he also had several injuries, but he was happy to play with the club because it was his childhood dream. 

He was part of the Bundesliga champion in 2002. According to Addo, what he likes about Dortmund is that the club has fans in the whole of Germany. 

It’s not a high upper-class club, and the people are hardworking and down-to-earth. 

He started his coaching career with his former club Hamburger SV where he coached the under 19 teams, and later when he returned as a coach at Dortmund, it was like coming home again. 

He said when he won the German Cup with the team, defeating RB Leipzig in the final was a great moment for him. 

He says when transitioning from a player to a coach, you start to see a lot of things differently. He added,

”When you are a player, a lot of times you think about your performance and about what you can contribute to the team and club while when you are a coach, you always think about how you can improve, what solution can you give to the players, what can you train to improve them? It’s so different.

He says a coaching job is one of the best jobs one can have, which is like having your hobby as a working place. 

He further added that being a player, being a coach, being involved in football, arguing, speaking about football, and smelling the grass every day is wonderful. 

Addo led the Ghana national team to qualify for the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup, which was a proud moment for him, the group, and the whole nation.
