Nuno Mendes

Nuno Mendes is a Portuguese-born professional footballer who is a left-back for Paris Saint-Germain and the Portugal national team. 

Mendes was born Nuno Alexandre Tavares Mendes.

His early days 

Mendes was born in Sintra, Portugal, to his Angolan parents. Growing up, he and his older brother had a normal childhood like that of any city kid. 

He played football every day down on the street. 

Since he was playing football all the time, his sports teacher Bruno Botelho spotted him and invited him to play for the amateur club Despertar. 

He was soon to impress everyone and caught the eye of Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP though he opted to go with Sporting.

He lost his father at quite an early age

For Mendes, his family is everything and on whom he relies every time. 

He says it’s important for him to have his family by his side, but unfortunately, he lost his father at quite an early age. 

He was playing for Sporting CP when he lost his father. He said he had to grow faster after he lost his dad. 

During his hard time, it was Sporting CP that helped him grow both as a person and a player because of the other responsibilities he took over while at the academy, he said.

An interesting story with Sporting 

Mendes was just nine years old when the scout person of Sporting, Akil Momade, visited his house, but at first, he thought he was going to be robbed, not knowing he was a Sporting Scout. 

During an interview, he recalled an interesting story before he joined the club’s youth system at the age of 10. 

According to him, while he was returning home from school one day, he found someone following him, after which he ran home and locked the door. 

When he heard the knock on the door, he thought he was about to be robbed and went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife to protect himself. 

He opened the door and found the same person who, after seeing the knife in his hand, asked him to calm down and said he was from Sporting scout and even showed his card, after which Mendes put the knife away.

He moved to Sporting’s academy at the age of 14 after four years of making a two-hour trip to train with his teacher. 

He had his first tenure with Sporting on his 18th birthday. A few minutes later, he was summoned to the president’s office to extend his contract. 

He said it was a very special day and a proud moment for him as his mother and brother were present there.

He is living his dream in PSG

Since his childhood, he has always wanted to play for big clubs, and PSG was one of them. 

He moved to Paris Saint-Germain in August on a season-long loan from Sporting CP and won the League 1 title before permanently joining the club. 

In an interview on the club’s official website, Mendes said everything went very quickly in the last hours of the transfer window. 

He was in the selection and received a call to warn him that there was a possibility of signing with Paris Saint-Germain, which filled him with happiness. 

He didn’t imagine living that kind of adventure so quickly, but at the same time, a professional footballer must be ready for anything, he added.
