Nedim Bajrami

Nedim Bajrami is a professional football player who plays for Italian football club Sassuolo and the Albania national team. 

He plays from the position of midfielder or winger. He was born on February 28, 1999 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Nedim scored a goal against the Czech Republic in the Euro 2024 qualifying match, which led Albania to earn a point. 

Even though the match ended in a draw by 1-1, Nedim said he scored the most beautiful goal of his career.

Nedim started his international career in 2013 with Switzerland U15. He then played with Switzerland U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21. 

After Nedim received Albanian citizenship on March 7, 2021, he decided he wanted to play for Albania. 

On March 9, 2021, Switzerland U21 manager Mauro Lustrinelli revealed that Nedim had chosen to represent his country of origin, Albania. 

Mauro said they made great efforts to convince Nedim to continue playing for Switzerland, but he made it clear to them that his heart beats stronger for his country of origin. 

He also added that identification is an important value when it comes to playing for the Switzerland national team so they had no choice but to let him go. 

However, the switch was not so easy. He was required to obtain permission from FIFA to make the switch. 

His request to play for Albania was initially rejected with a claim that he had played with Switzerland until he was 21. 

His case remained pending until the Albanian federation decided not to give up such an amazing player and pursued his file at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. 

The case was submitted in June 2021, reviewed in August 2021, and then he was finally allowed to play for Albania on August 30, 2021. 

He made his debut with the Albania national team on September 5, 2021, in the FIFA World Cup qualification match against Hungary. 

He scored his first goal with Albania on June 17, 2023, in a Euro 2024 qualifying game against Moldova.

Nedim, in an interview, revealed that he received a call from Edi Reja. Edi asked him if he wanted to come and play for Albania. 

Nedim then talked with his family, and in the end, he chose Albania over Switzerland. 

Nedim said he had chosen Albania with his heart, and he was happy and proud to be Albanian and a part of the national team. 

There are many players whose country of origin is Albania but who were born in Switzerland play for Switzerland, like Xhaka, Shaqiri, Berhami, and others, but when he received a call for Euro 2024 from Switzerland, he said no.
