He was just 54 years old at the time. The funeral was held on November 3, 2023, and Matthew rests at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. 

The medical examiner revealed on December 15, 2023, the cause of death to be drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine. 

The Los Angeles County Department Of Medical Examiner made a statement that,

At the high levels of ketamine found in his post-mortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression, while drowning contributes due to the likelihood of submersion into the pool as he lapsed into unconsciousness; coronary artery disease contributes due to exacerbation of ketamine induces myocardial effects on the heart. 

Matthew had been taking ketamine-assisted psychotherapy sessions to treat anxiety, and his last known session was a week before his death. 

However, the report suggested that the ketamine in his system at the time of his death could not be from the infusion therapy as ketamine's half-life is about 3 to 4 hours or even less. 

On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, Captain Scot Williams of the Los Angeles Police Department said that they were working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and U. S. Postal Services in order to investigate the source of ketamine that led to the actor's death. 

The inquiry has been going on since they found Matthew died due to ketamine, an anesthetic with psychedelic properties. 

Captain Scot further said that they were investigating the source of ketamine and whether it was obtained legally or not.

Courtney Cox played Monica Geller in Friends, who later became the wife of Chandler Bing, a character played by Matthew.
