Leon Goretzka was born on February 6, 1995, to Konrad Goretzka and Katharine Goretzka in Bochum, Germany. 

His father worked as an electrical engineer and automotive engineer for Opel, whereas his mother was a presbyter in the protestant parish of Altenbochum-Laer and a business manager in Bochum. 

He is also blessed with a brother named Philip Goretzka. Leon started his youth career with Werner SV 06 Bochum in 1999. 

He started his senior career with VFL Bochum in 2012. He joined Bayern Munich on July 1, 2018, by signing a four-year contract. 

He renewed a contract with the club on September 16, 2022, until 2026.
