Married to an Aruban husband

Marleen is married to her husband Boris Dumfries who is from Aruba. The couple moved to Rotterdam from Aruba in the 1960s.

They have four kids together, two sons, Denzel (26) and Donovan (20), and daughters, Demelza (28), and Danielle (23).

Marleen in an interview said Denzel as a kid was very present. He has been called the tease of the family and the school.

She had to go to school every week because he would be sent out of the class. In 2006, the family emigrated to Aruba but returned within a year.

They named Denzel after the Hollywood actor

Marleen and her husband Boris named Denzel after Hollywood Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington.

Denzel in an interview said it's special for him to get named after such an intelligent person.

He said Washington was not only a great man but a true gentleman and example for him. Not only in movies but he has an impact on people outside.

Denzel is a mamma's boy

According to Marleen, Denzel is a mamma's boy, and she is his confidant.

She said there is a strong friendship between them and that he shares everything with her.

Boris has another very different role in the house, one at least as important, she said of her husband.

Their eldest daughter Demelza described her father to be more nurturing.

"When mom has made sandwiches for us, you just got two slices stuck together. With my dad, you can taste the love he puts into it", she said.

Where did Denzel get the inspiration to play football?

From the very beginning, Denzel always said that he wanted to become a professional footballer.

He said he doesn't know where the motivation came from.

It was not that his dad was a soccer player or somebody from his family was a soccer player but he was determined to become a professional footballer and was hungry for that.

He did everything to achieve his dream.

Denzel started late. He was 18 when he joined Sparta Rotterdam in 2014. He stayed three years with the club. In his three years, he also captained the team.

He then moved to Heerenven. After a season at Heerenven, he joined PSV in 2018. During his time at PSV, he also became a Dutch national team player.

Denzel played twice for Aruba before switching to the Netherlands

Denzel was in his youth career playing for BVV Barendrecht when he got an email from the Aruban Football Association saying they wanted him to play in two friendlies with the national team.

After getting the message, he called the Royal Netherlands Football Association asking if it was possible and if he would still be able to play for Holland.

When they responded saying there was no problem, he flew to Aruba and played two friendlies. He was 17 at the time.

Growing up, he wrote "I will play for the national team" on his bedroom wall. He always had a strong conviction that he would.

It was never a dream, but an objective; something he felt he had to achieve.

He has always been a fan of the Dutch team and he knew that one day he would be part of it, he told UEFA.com.
