Markku Kanerva

Markku Kanerva is a Finnish football manager, former player and also worked as an elementary school teacher.  He has been working as a manager for the Finnish national football team lately. 

Markku is one of the most well-known faces in Finland. He has gained massive success as a football manager and coach. 

He also used to work as a school teacher in his early years, but later decided to focus more on his football career as it needed a lot more time and dedication. 

He also used to be a player himself and used to play as a central defender and full back. He stopped playing because of the severe injuries that he faced.

Journey from player to manager

Markku first started his journey on the football field as a player for HJK Helsinki in 1983. He played for the team for almost seven years, left the club in 1990, joined IF Elfsborg in 1991, and left shortly after 1992. 

In 1993, he played for the team FinnPa, and in 1994 and 1995, he was in HJK Helsinki again. He played for FC Honka in 1996 but was continuing with HJK Helsinki again till 1998. 

He also played for the national team and also scored a goal. And that was the last year he performed as a player and had to leave football as a player because he had faced severe injuries. 

He was an excellent player and was doing very well, but fate had something else planned.

He had already started working as a school teacher when he was a football player, and after he stopped football for a while and continued to be a teacher. 

Later in 2001, he started to be the assistant manager of the football team he used to play for HJK Helsinki, and it needed all of his focus, so he left his job as a teacher and focused on football. 

In 2003 he became the manager of the team FC Viikingit, and in 2004 he started to lead the team Finland U21. 

Till 2010, he got the job as an assistant manager of the Finland national team 2011 and became the national team manager in 2016.

Markku had stated in an interview when he was asked about the possibilities of winning the world cup that it is tough to get there, as the EUROS have 24 countries. 

In the FIFA world cup, there will be only 13 countries from Europe, and it is almost half from the EUROS, but one may never know as the team always keeps surprising everybody. 

His statement shows that he has immense belief in his team.
