Mark Leonard

Mark Leonard was the father of an American professional basketball player, Kawhi Leonard, who plays for the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association(NBA). 

Mark was from Chicago. He spent his adulthood in and around Compton. He owned a Compton car wash in a black-owned community for his living. 

Mark took his last breath in front of his car wash. It was the day he was supposed to be at Kawhi’s game but sadly ended up at a tomb.

His first marriage was a failure.

Mark was married to his first wife, Kim Robertson. From their union, they gave birth to five kids, four girls and a boy.

After years of trying to conceive, the couple became pregnant with their first child. The day before his death, Mark got the happy news of his spouse’s pregnancy. 

He was overwhelmed with the news of becoming a father once again and had shared the news with their relatives but no one knew the following night was going to be his last night. 

The father and son could not see each other. His son Zion is 13 years old. 

His death is still a mystery that is still unsolved

Mark was shot multiple times and was killed on January 18, 2008, at his car wash. He was pronounced dead after he was rushed to the hospital. 

His second spouse Jacquelyne was there witnessing his death but was helpless. Jacquelyne had just discovered her pregnancy with their first son Zion at the time. 

According to her, the incident took place after one of Mark’s friends came up asking to mediate a dispute which later turned into loud, heated arguments. 

After a loud discussion, everyone left, but she suspected something bad was going to happen after she noticed several people driving back and forth in their trucks in front of their car wash. 

A few hours later, an unknown man dressed in a grey shirt with a hood over his head came towards them, started to shoot Mark, and ran off. 

She was unable to identify the killer as he had a certain mark on his face. Three months later, Jacquelyne was targeted at their car wash. 

She was shot in her leg while she was running to save her life. After 11 years, she came forward speaking about her husband’s murder hoping for justice. 

All these years, she feared speaking out about being targeted. 13 years have passed, but the murderer is still unknown.

Kawhi was deeply heartbroken after hearing the news of his father’s death. 

Following the day of his death, Kawhi kept on motivating himself and working harder to make his father proud. 

According to Kawhi, losing his beloved father in his teens has helped him be grateful for whatever he has.

According to Jacquelyne, she found an old Bible which had Mark’s prayer in it. 

He had made a list of things he wished to happen in his life, and one of them was seeing his son Kawhi going to the pros. His prayers were heard.

Kawhi is regarded as one of the most decorated NBA players. His NBA career began with the 15th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft by Indiana Pacers. 

Before Kawhi could play any games for the Pacers, he was traded to San Antonio Spurs, where he spent seven years. 

Kawhi was traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2018. On July 10, 2019, he signed a three-year contract with Los Angeles Clippers. 

His stunning NBA career has led him to win several awards, including the NBA championship in 2014, the MVP Award, defensive player of the year award.
