HOW DID MARITA AND REGGIE MEET?
Marita met Reggie at a benefit dinner in Los Angeles. Magic Johnson, a fellow basketball player, introduced them to each other.
Even though Reggie had no intention of getting married before retiring from his career, the universe had other plans.
They were instantly attracted to each other after their first encounter. Reggie knew he was going to marry her as soon as they met.
They began dating in 1990 when Reggie was at the peak of his career, which led to Marita attracting much attention from the media.
After dating each other for one year or two, they wanted to make their relationship official.
They exchanged wedding vows on August 29, 1992. Nothing has been revealed about their big day.
WHY DID THEY END THEIR MARRIAGE?
Everything seemed perfect between the couple as it was displayed, but the real story was quite different.
It was later revealed by Reggie that they were unhappy with the marriage from the beginning.
In an interview in 1994, he recalled that his wife was bored on their first night in Indianapolis.
The interview was taken at the same time when Marita had already decided to pursue her career in acting and moved to Los Angeles.
It is also said that the couple never spent much time together.
With Reggie busy in his career, Marita rarely came home and preferred to roam around Europe, Los Angeles, and New York.
Marita was also unhappy with getting recognized as a celebrity wife. She wanted to create and maintain her own identity.
According to sources, their marriage went further downhill after their Indiana house burned down due to an arson incident.
It was said that Reggie blamed his wife for the fire. Reggie filed for divorce in August of 2000.
They separated a couple of days before Reggie signed a $36 million deal with the Pacers as he thought that if he filed the divorce case now, then Marita would not get any more of his money.
HAD A MESSY DIVORCE?
After the divorce was filed, the property needed to be settled in the process. However, when Reggie asked Marita to sign a prenup, she did so without hesitation.
Marita got a large amount, $5 million, as a divorce settlement, which was the amount to be paid according to the prenup.
However, Marita was not happy with the amount she received and accused Reggie of hiding his money by lending it to his friends just to reduce the settlement.
Marita also asked for $18000 monthly or spousal support. On getting cross-questioned by Reggie's lawyer, Buck Berry, she said she needed the amount to pay the rent of her New York apartment.
Both of them settled the case later secretly. There are rumors that they married each other for fame and popularity rather than love and respect.
