Maria Ratzinger is the late mother of late Pope Benedict XVI.
Her beloved son was the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City from 19 April 2005 to 28 February 2013.
Pope Benedict XVI was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger.
Married life
She was married to her long-time husband, Joseph Ratzinger Sr., a police officer.
From their marriage union, they gave birth to their three kids, a daughter Maria Ratzinger, and two sons, Georg and Joseph.
Her husband’s opposition to Nazism led to demotions and harassment of the family. Her eldest son Georg became a Catholic priest and a famous musician.
He was the former director of the Regensburger Domspatzen choir, while her daughter never considered marrying and wished to manage Joseph’s household until her demise in 1991.

No one in her family is alive today
Ratzinger lost her husband in the year 1959 while she was still married to him.
Ratzinger died three years later after her husband’s death, followed by her daughter’s death in 1991. She is buried alongside her daughter and her husband.
Her eldest son Georg died at the age of 96 after being hospitalized in Regensburg.
With his death, her son Joseph (Pope Benedict) was only the member alive in her family until his death in December 2022.
Benedict died at 95 in Vatican City because of his ill health. Prior to his death, Pope Francis had announced that Benedict was very sick and declining.
The funeral and burial of Pope Benedict
Pope Benedict’s body lay in state in St. Peter’s Basilica from 2nd to 4th February, where approximately 200,000 mourners paid their respect.
The casket was closed in a private ritual in the Vatican on the evening of 4th January.
His funeral service was conducted by Pope Francis in the presence of tens of thousands of mourners at St. Peter’s square.
After the funeral in Rome, his body was buried in the grottoes under St. Peter’s Basilica in the tomb last occupied by Pope John Paul II.
