Sanches bears the same name as his father

Maria was married to Renato Sanches Sr. Sanches bears the same name as his father who hailed from Sao Tome Principe. 

Maria and Renato welcomed their son in the hospital Amadora-Sintra in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. 

However, they parted ways just a few months after the birth of their son. Following their separation, Sanches's father moved to France to work. 

Sanches's birth was only registered after five years after his actual birth. 

He was born on the 18th of August, 1997 but his birth was registered after his father's return in 2002. 

At the time of the registration in 2002, Maria was just 24 years old and a single mother while Sanches's father who was 36 was married to someone else.

Sanches in an interview said, his parents worked hard to give him and his two brothers a better life. He also said that his entire family were Benfica supporters.

Sanches has been subjected to racism for a long time. 

Back in April 2016, after a league match against Rio Ave in Portugal, he threw his jersey into the crowd for Benfica's away supporters. 

After a moment as he was walking toward the tunnel, hooligans started making monkey noises.

Sanches was born and raised in Lisbon. As a kid growing up, he was always on the streets playing football with his friends. 

He played for fun until he joined the local team at the age of eight in the neighborhood and became serious. 

At the age of nine, he joined Benfica's youth academy. He made his senior debut with Benfica in 2015 with the B-team in the second division. 

After a year on the reserve team, he started training with the first team. 

In 2016, he signed Bayern Munich, and the following year, he was loaned out to Swansea City. 

Sanches said his time in Germany was a learning experience. His first year with the club was tough. 

It took him a while to adapt and also he didn't get as much playing time as he wanted. In 2019, he joined Lille. 

A lot of clubs were interested in signing him but he chose Lille because they had finished second in the League. 

He was at Lille for three years. In his three years at the club, they managed to win the title. 

In an interview, he said he felt lucky to be at Lille because every time he played in a league, his team won. 

He joined PSG in August 2022.

According to Sanches, he had a chance to go to PSG while he was in Germany and it was almost a deal done but at the last minute, Bayern Munich didn't let him sign.

Sanches said it was his family and friends who supported him, not the football world

Sanches in an interview talked about mental health which according to him is everything. 

He said having a mental breakdown or emotional block doesn't let one move forward causing them to get lost and think about it. 

Sanches stressed the importance of family members and loved ones whom one can rely on and who will never let them down. 

According to him, when he was down, it wasn't the football world that went to support him and wanted to help him but his friends and family without whom he would not have moved forward and would not have the moment he is experiencing.
