Marcus Hjulmand is the son of Danish football manager and a former player Kasper Hjulmand who is currently the head coach for the Danish national team.
Marcus followed his father’s footsteps and have interest in football. Having played for Kelkheim-Hornau, he is currently playing for Allerod football Klub (A.K.F). He was born in Denmark and holds Danish citizenship.
Knee injury that obstructed Kasper’s playing career
Kasper began his career with Randers Freja in 1987. After having spent four years with the club, he joined Herlev IF and moved to B.93 after two seasons.
He captained B.93 and helped the team to secure club promotion to the super league in 1998. But his playing career was obstructed at the age of 26 because of his knee injury.
He underwent seven surgeries in one knee, two in the other knee, and one in the groin. His dream of playing faded away, and above that, the worst part was he could not play football.
How did he prepare himself to be a coach?
In his late 20s, he was offered a coach position for Lyngby, where he first started coaching for U-18, then assistant and later team coach before becoming the head coach in 2006.
In 2008 he joined Nordsjaelland as an assistant coach and then as a head coach, where he led the team to win their first Danish championship.
After a year in Mainz, he returned to Nordsjaelland. During his earlier days as a football coach, he bought a video camera to record the matches.
To become a national coach, he prepared himself by going through old national matches, reading the history from the late 1800s and 1900s, and watching internationals from the 70s and 80s.
A tough and emotional night for Kasper and his team
Kasper and his team had to go through an emotional, heart-breaking situation when their midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the ground during the opening match of Euro 2020 against Finland.
Before half-time, Christian suddenly fell on the ground while he was returning after the Denmark throw-in. He was immediately rushed to the hospital.
As per the doctor, it was a cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated. The team was given an option to finish the game the same day or the next day at 2 pm.
Kasper and his team waited till Christian regained consciousness. Amid emotional breakdown, the team agreed to continue the game. They lost the game at 1-0.
According to Kasper, the night was tough for them and reminded them that having a valuable relationship is the most important thing.
He was proud of his people who took such good care of each other at such a time.

His parents Kasper and Vibeke Hjulmand, met at Folk High School in the year 1992.
The exact date of their marriage is not known, but the couple has been together since 1992 and is living a happily married life.
Vibeke is a secretary at Dansk Psykolog Forening. They are currently residing in Allerod in North Zealand.
