Makhosini Shabalala is well known as being brother of singer and musician late Joseph Shabalala and late Jockey Shabalala.

His father’s name is Jonathan Mluwane Shabalala and mother's name is Nomandla Elina Shabalala. His parents worked at a white-owned farm.

 He was raised with his six siblings on a farm outside Ladysmith

His father died when he was a toddler. His father died in the 1940s. After the death of his father, his elder brother, Joseph, had to look after his family at a very young age.

Joseph Shabalala played a vital role as parents of his siblings and he also took care of family from the very beginning.

 His birth name was Bhekizizwe Joseph Siphatimandla Mxoveni, Mshengu Bigboy Shabalala. 

He was a singer and musician. He was well known for his band ‘Ladysmith Black Mambazo,’ which was formed by him 1960 with his brothers and cousins. 

His band got internationally recognized after singing with American singer Paul Simon on his album Graceland in 1986. It is one of the popular bands of South Africa.

He retired from the band in 2008. Afterward, His youngest son Thamsanqa leads the group.

He was born on 28 August 1941 in Ladysmith, South Africa. He was a married man. His wife's name is Thoko Maduna. He has four children. 

He died on 11 February 2020 at the age of 78 at the hospital in Pretoria, South Africa. His health was not good for several years.

His Two Siblings Shot Dead

On 10 December 1991, his brother Headman Shabalala was shot while driving home after attending a family gathering. 

 He was killed by off duty white security guard in Ladysmith.  His murder was racial murder.

He was a founder member of ‘ Ladysmith Black Mambazo.’

Another tragic incident happened in the family that his brother Ben Shabalala was also shot and killed in unknown circumstances, and that was on 16 June 2004 in a Suburb of Durban, South Africa.

 He was driving his two children school while that devastating incident happened.

He was also a member of the Ladysmith Black Mambazo band but he retired from the band in 1993 to spend time with his family.
