Luis Fernando Suarez

Luis Fernando Suarez is a Columbian-born football manager and a former player who is the current manager of the Costa Rica national football team.

His career so far

Suarez hung up his boots after a short football career. He played for Deportivo Pereira and Atletico Nacional between 1980 and 1995 as a defender before he decided to go for a coaching career. 

He was an assistant to Francisco Maturana for years and considered him to be his inspiration and a father figure. 

He went on to manage his former club Atletico Nacional in 1999 and enjoyed success in winning the 1999 Colombian championship with the club. 

He then managed Deportivo Cali, Deportes Tolima, and Aucas before managing Ecuador in 2004 and leading the team to their second consecutive World cup in 2006. 

Saurez resigned on the third day of the qualifiers after having lost all three games against Venezuela, Brazil, and Paraguay.

Before taking over Honduras in 2011, he managed Aucas, Atletico Nacional, and Juan Aurich in between.

He led Honduras to the World Cup as third qualified from the CONCACAF qualifiers in Brazil. 

He resigned after the last game and went on to manage Universitario, Dorados de Sinaloa, La Equidad, Junior, and Atlectico Bucaramanga.

He resigned from Atletico Bucaramanga to coach Costa Rica in 2021.

His third World Cup is an obsession for him.

The word obsession is what Suarez has been mentioning the most recently, and that obsession is his third world cup which, according to him, is a good obsession. 

He has a note stuck on his fridge door with the names of the countries Costa Rica would be facing if they qualify for the FIFA World Cup. 

The names of the countries are Spain, Germany, Japan, and Costa Rica. He stuck it on his fridge door because it’s never far from his mind. 

He is always going to the fridge because he drinks plenty of water. The note is a way of visualizing it, he says. 

According to him, when he was in the first division, he didn’t know what it was, and when he figured it out and did well, the only thing he wanted to do was go back. 

When he landed the Costa Rica Job, he said to himself that he got to go for it and that he’ll die if don’t qualify. 

And that’s where he is now: halfway between death and obsession, and he hopes his obsession wins out.

This World Cup will be his third as he has appeared in World Cup twice before, first with Ecuador in 2006 in Germany and second with Honduras in 2014 in Brazil.

His hard work paid off, and his obsession won as Costa Rica is going to the World Cup. 

Costa Rica completed the 32-nation FIFA-World-Cup lineup with a 1-0 win over New Zealand in an intercontinental playoff in Qatar.

Suarez scored his own World Cup Hatrick. Talking about the victory, Saurez said, 

“This squad shows what it is like to be a Costa Rican. They never quit and give their 100%. 

“It is an obsession that I always pursued. To be in this position is beautiful”. 

He is married to his wife

Suarez has managed to keep his personal life low-key. But he is married and has a family. 

The detail of his wedding is not known. He is also a grandfather, as he mentioned his grandson in one of the interviews. 

Besides that, nothing is known about his family. Since Suarez has kept his personal life low-key, it is unknown how many children he has.
