Luis de la Fuente, full name Luis de la Fuente Castillo, is a professional football manager and former football player. 

He is the current head coach of the Spain national team.

Who are his parents and siblings?

He was born in Haro, Spain to his parents, Alberto and Berta Castillo

His mother, Berta, owned a family business, haberdashery, in Plaza de la Paz while his father was a merchant marine and a football fan. 

He is also blessed with siblings. His sister, Ana de la Fuente, took over the family business and converted it into a boutique. 

His father was the one who introduced him to football and took him to Bilbao to cheer for the Athletic

During an interview with Rioja Digital, Luis said his parents gave him love for his people and taught him to love Haro the way they wanted him. 

He added they are his roots, customs, and traditions and there are his family, childhood friends, and his best memories

He feels very proud to be a Jarrero and never misses an opportunity to let the world know that. 

He also revealed that he spent his childhood and youth in Haro and his entire family still resides there. 

He revealed that when he was young, his neighbors used to recognize him as the son of Alberto and la Berti.

He has a very intimate bond and even though his profession takes him away from Haro for a long time, he goes there whenever he can, especially on the designated dates.

Alberto followed in his footsteps and works with him on the Spain national team as an analyst in lower categories. 

He also worked as a methodology manager and analyst at SD Huesca

During an interview with El Diario del Alto Aragon in 2019, Luis gushed about his son and said his son knows much more than him and is better prepared. 

He also added that Alberto is very good and it was a pleasure to see young people with the concern they have. 

He also said that he has learned a lot from what his son shares with him.

His Career 

Luis started his career as a player in 1976 with the Athletic Bilbao youth team and played with the club for two years until 1978.

He began his senior career with Bilbao Athletic in 1978 and got to the first team and also made his La Liga debut on March 8, 1991

He was promoted to the main squad of Athletic Bilbao in the summer of 1982. He then joined Sevilla in July 1987 and played with the club until 1991

He returned to Athletic Bilbao in 1991 with a fee of 20 million pesetas

In 1993, he joined Alaves but hung his boot after playing for only one season at the age of 33. 

He also represented his country, Spain, at the international level. 

He played for Spain U18 from 1987 to 1979, for Spain U19 from 1982 to 1984 and Spain Olympic in 1988. He played from the position of left-back.

Luis started his managerial career with Club Portugalete in 1997. He then took charge of Aurrera in the summer of 2000 but was sacked in the March 2001

He managed the youth team of Sevilla from 2001 to 2005. He returned to the Athletic Bilbao youth team as a manager in 2005

While he took charge of Bilbao Athletic, he managed the youth team at first then reserve, and also acted as a match delegate for two years before returning to previous duties from 2006 to 2011

He became the manager of Alaves on July 13, 2011, but was dismissed on October 17, 2011

He took charge of Spain U19 from 2013 to 2018, Spain U21 from 2018 to 2022, and Spain U23 in 2021

He was then appointed as the manager of the senior team. He became the head coach of the Spain national team in 2022.

He led Spain to Euro 2024

Luis has been the manager of the Spain national team since December 8, 2022. His contract will be until UEFA Euro 2024 with an option of extension. 

Spain was in Group A of UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying which consisted of five countries, Cyprus, Georgia, Norway, Scotland, and Spain

Spain and Scotland qualified directly for the final tournament. Spain secured their spot in Euro 2024 after defeating Norway by 1-0 on October 15, 2023

Spain will face Croatia on June 15, 2024, Italy on June 21, 2024, and Albania on June 25, 2024.
