A church wedding followed by a grand celebration 

Lola and Mikel dated for several years before exchanging their wedding vows on the 1st of June, 2024. 

It began with a religious ceremony at the church in Pamplona after which they headed to Navarresse municipality of Olite for a grand celebration. 

Among the celebrity guests were the members of the Real team such as Artiz Elustondo, Benat Turrientes, Martin Merquelanz, Robin Le Normand, and Alex Remiro.

The couple had to postpone their honeymoon as Mikel had to join the training for a Euro Cup. 

Mikel used her for weight training during the pandemic

Back in 2020, when the couple was self-isolating due to the coronavirus pandemic, they discovered new techniques for keeping themselves fit. 

The couple shared the video where Mikel was using her for weight training and the video went viral. 

In the video, Lola laid on his back whilst he completed a few press-ups.

The Dortmund bus incident changed Mikel's perspective on life

On the 11th of April, 2017, Dortmund was being transported between their team hotel and the Westfalenstadion for a Champions League quarter-final first leg against Monaco when three home-made pipe bombs hidden behind the hedge wrapped with sharp metal pins had just been detonated. 

Luckily, the bus-reinforced windows saved them from injury except Spanish defender Marc Bartra who required surgery on his right wrist.

Talking about the dreadful experience, Mikel said the moment was very hard for them when they thought they were all going to die and that the memories of his teammates throwing themselves on the floor and screaming at the driver to get them out of the bus will forever hunt them. 

They didn't know if there would be more bombs or if a group with guns would get on the bus and kill them. 

That experience changed Mikel's perspective on life. He now always tries to look at experiences even bad ones with good ones, he further expressed.

Mikel is the son of a former footballer and manager

Mikel is the son of former footballer and manager Angel Merino. He played for several clubs like Osasuna, Las Palmas, and Celta Burgos. 

He began his managerial career in 2004 starting with Osasuna's youth side. He then joined the reserve team. 

Before retiring, he coached at Pena Sport in the same capacity.

Mikel in an interview said, his father never forced him to play football but as he grew older he started asking his father about techniques related to football. 

His father became his mentor. He coached him in his youth career at Osasuna.

Mikel started his senior career with the reserve team of Osasuna before making his first team debut in August 2014. 

In 2016, he left Osasuna to join Borussia Dortmund. It was a big step not only in his professional career but also in his life, he said. 

Mikel had a tough first year at Dortmund where he played just nine games. 

In July 2017 he joined New Castle United on a season-long loan before moving to the club permanently. 

After a season at New Castle United, he joined Real Sociedad.

In his first season at Real Sociedad, he became a starter scoring four times in 32 fixtures despite having difficulty adapting to his new team and injuries. 

He wore the captain's armband for the first time in a 1-0 league defeat to FC Barcelona in March 2020. 

He won his first title after playing 90 minutes of the 2020 Copa del Rey Final in April 2021.
