Lee Jae-sung

Lee Jae-sung is a South Korean professional footballer who plays for the Bundesliga club Mainz 05 and the Korean national team. 

He plays as an attacking midfielder or a winger.

His career so far

Lee was born and raised in Ulsan and didn’t leave his hometown Uslan until he was 19. 

He left Uslan for the first time after he joined the university in Seoul, Korean University. 

When he moved to Seoul for the first time, the only thing he had on his mind was, “when will I be able to return home?" 

Lee made his professional debut with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors appearing in the 2014 AFC Champions League match. 

His football skills were highly praised by then manager of Jeonbuk, Choi Kang-hee. 

He had his best season with the club in 2016, where he provided 16 assists and also won the 2016 AFC Champions League. 

He joined 2. Bundesliga club Holstein Kiel in July 2018 on a three-year contract. 

He was able to impress with his performance in his first game with two assists that led him to earn the Player of the Matchday title. 

He scored the fourth penalty in a 2020-21 DFB Pokal match and later reached the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal match for the first time in history, although they got eliminated by Borussia Dortmund. 

In July 2021, Lee signed a three-year contract with Mainz 05. Lee will be representing Korea in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. 

This will be his second time. He played all three games in the group stage after he was named in South Korea’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

How he recharges his energy?

Lee recharges his energy by spending quality time with his parents, especially with his older brother’s family, who resides in Jeonju. 

He spends most of his time with his niece and nephew. 

He expresses his gratitude to his family, who are also his oldest fans, for their passionate support and unwavering love. 

His father, according to him, does not forget to point out things he doesn’t pay attention to and gives him advice to which he always listens. 

His father’s presence and the advice given to him is an important nourishment to him.

He has been the victim of racial abuse

Like some of the other players in football, Lee has also been the victim of racial abuse. 

His post on his Naver blog addressing racial abuse and sharing his personal experience came after Wolverhampton Wanderers filed a complaint with UEFA regarding the racial abuse Hwang-Hee chan faced during a friendly match in Portugal. 

He felt he needed to confront the issue as it is a growing problem for Korean Players and shared his own personal experience. 

He began with his first experience while playing for the German side Holstein Kiel. 

According to him, one of his teammates walked into a room and started questioning what he had been eating, which made him so conscious of the smell of garlic that he started avoiding crowds, stopped eating Korean foods, and even started putting on cologne before going to training to avoid criticisms. 

He was made fun of for his eyes, and he used to get asked to open his eyes during training.

Also, outside of football, he faced racism. While traveling in Germany, a group of drunk people passed derogatory comments and insults. 

Stating that the issue of racism is not only confined to Korean Players in Europe, he admitted witnessing the attitude of Korean players and fans towards foreign players in the K league while playing in Korea and was guilty of the way they treated them.

Lee is yet to be married and does not have a girlfriend. He is currently single.
