He has earned money through his career as a tennis player. In 1993 he won his first tour-level match at Wimbledon. In 1994 he won his first career singles titles. 

It was three years later he got his breakthrough. In 1997 he reached the semifinals in the French Open. He then won the U.S. Open by beating Greg Rusedski in a four-set final.

A year later, in 1998, he won the Canadian Open. In July 1999, he became the World No. 1 men’s singles. However, he got to hold the title for just a week.
