Langdon Doyle Bates was famous for being a father to an Academy-award-winning actress, Kathy Bates. Langdon was a mechanical engineer by profession.

Married life

Langdon Doyle was married to his wife Bertye Kathleen Bates, a homemaker. They exchanged wedding vows in 1932 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. 

She used to work for a book store before becoming a homemaker. They remained in marital bliss until he died in 1989. 

He died a few days after his second amputation at 89. Bertye was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She died on the 15th of February, 1997, at 90.

He never forgave his spouse for reviving him from his suicidal attempt

Langdon tried to attempt suicide at the age of 83 because he had diabetes, due to which he was facing an amputation.  

His suicidal attempt failed as he was found at the right time by his spouse, who revived him. 

According to Kathy, her father never forgave her mother for reviving him. 

The aftermath of his suicidal attempt existed for a long time where Kathy had to take a break from the Broadway play “Night Mother,” which was about suicide. 

The plot brought back her memories of her father’s tragic suicidal attempt so hard that she had to leave the play for a day or two. 

After the play was released in Los Angeles, both he and his spouse went to see the play, but at the time, he neither could hear nor see it. 

Though he could not hear or see, he told his daughter that he would not call his daughter cat, which was her nickname, but he would be calling her a tiger. 

Father of three daughters

He was the father of his three daughters, Mary, Patricia, and Kathy Bates. Kathy is the youngest of his three daughters. 

They delivered her on the 28th of June, 1948. She was delivered quite late. The age gap between Kathy and her sisters is eight and fifteen years. 

His father was a lawyer and an aspiring author

Langdon Doyle was born to his father, Finis Langdon Bates, an American lawyer and an aspiring author. 

His mother, Madge Young Doyle, was his father’s second wife. He remarried after the death of his first wife. He died in 1923 at 75 years old. Langdon was 23 at the time.

Kathy is a divorcee

Kathy is a divorcee. She married actor Tony Campisi in 1991 after being in a long-term committed relationship. 

However, their relationship could not last long, and they ended up in divorce after six years of marriage in 1997. The couple never had a child.

Kathy is a two-times cancer survival

Kathy was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003. 

Again in 2012, she was diagnosed with breast cancer where she had her 22 lymph nodes removed, nineteen on her left side and three on her right.

She currently has lymphedema, which came after double mastectomy and treatment of breast cancer. 

She is currently the spokesperson for the Lymphatic Education and Research Network.
