Kristen Lepore

Kristen Lepore is an Award-winning American-born animator and director. She is also famous as the spouse of film director Daniel Kwan. 

Lepore is the writer, director, and producer of “I am Groot,” a Marvel short on Disney+. She is CalArts Alumna. 

How did she meet her future husband?

Lepore met her future husband, Daniel Kwan, in Los Angeles through their mutual friend. 

According to Lepore, she commented on the Facebook video of them together hanging out, after which her animator friend from London suggested meeting Kwan saying he is a cool guy. 

Then they all met up and became fast friends. 

Lepore said she initially friend-zoned him, having seen his interest in something more, but then she started seeing him in a new light. 

It took them a year to start dating. They walked down the aisle on 25 August 2016 and are currently residing in California.

She is the mother of one

Lepore is the mother of one. She shares a son with her husband, whom they gave birth in 2019.

About her career

Lepore was around five years old when she first became interested in stop-motion. 

She would watch Jim Henson’s Behind the Scene specials, and she felt like everyone working there had the coolest job on the planet. 

She was constantly drawing and sculpting little creations in the back of her head. She only began experimenting with stop-motion after she went to college. 

She graduated from Maryland Institute College of Arts before graduating in Experimental Animation at CalArts. 

According to Lepore, after she graduated from MICA, she wasn't sure if she wanted to pursue a graduate degree, so she did freelance in animation for two years before joining CalArts. 

She needed some time after undergrad to prove to herself that she could make a living from doing animation. It was at CalArts where she made Bottle.

She said she got hooked after her first film. 

For her, it seemed like it was the best way to combine all her passion for sculpture, sound, and storytelling into one medium.

Her husband-directed movie “Everything Everywhere All At Once” took home 7 Oscars

A proud moment for Lepore and the whole team of “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” the 2022 movie written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, who took home 7 Oscars out of 11 nominations becoming the best science fiction movie ever to win the best picture and taking three of the four acting awards.

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert met at Emmerson College in Boston, where they both were studying films, but they initially hated each other. 

Though they were roommates and had one animation class together, they only became close friends after college. 

They hit it off instantly after they both landed a job at summer camp. That was the time when they hung out together and eventually shot a short film together. 

They initially started writing music videos together. 

Their manager was sending them scripts, and none of them were clicking in a way that was inspiring then, or it didn't feel like they wanted to spend years on other people's scripts, so they were like they had to try on themselves.

They started with their music videos which were for fun, but suddenly it became their career. 

In the process, they learned how to work together, and it was an amazing way to practice together. 

They would get a song from a record label where they would tell them the parameters and would be given three to four days to come up with the idea. 

It helped them to generate ideas fast. It all started from there, and the rest is history.
