John fell for her while he was on a blind date with her sister
Josephine was around 15 or 16 years old when she met her future husband on a blind date, but both of them were with different people.
In Carolyn McGivern's John Wayne: A Giant Show, he wrote John's friend set him up on a blind date with Carmen Senz, who was Joesphine's sister.
After a Thanksgiving dance at the Balboa Inn, James walked Carmen to their home, where he saw Josephine, who also had a date at the time.
All four of them ended up spending time together. James was completely smitten by Josephine's beauty than her sister's and kept making eye contact.
In the book, he described her as the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He felt as if a hypnotist had put him in a trance.
He stared at her all night. She was aristocratic and serene, and he was lost, he expressed.
They were married for 12 years
Josephine and John dated for seven years and got married on the 20th of June, 1933, after John was able to convince her family to marry her.
The ceremony took place in the garden of actress Loretta Young's home.
Together, they welcomed four children: Michael Wayne in 1934, Mary Antonia "Toni" Wayne LaCava in 1936, Patrick Wayne in 1939, and Melinda Wayne Munoz in 1940.
The marriage started to fall apart as John started getting busier in his career, which Josephine was not fond of.
The couple separated in 1944 and got divorced the following year at Christmas.
Both of their sons, Patrick and Michael, followed in their father's footsteps. Their eldest born Michael was a film producer and an actor.
He sadly passed away in April 2003 at the age of 68 from heart failure as a result of complications from lupus erythematosus.
In 2022, their daughter Melinda passed away.
Patrick got a chance to work alongside his father. During an interview, Patrick talked about the experience of working with his father.
He said it was a special experience for him because he had a brother and two sisters, and they were always competing for their father's attention, and when the film came around, he had him all to himself.
John went on to marry twice after getting divorced from her
John married Mexican actress Esperanza Baur a year after his divorce from Josephine. He met Baur while vacationing in Mexico City.
He had separated from Josephine but had not legally divorced. However, his marriage to Baur was tumultuous from the very beginning.
Once, she attempted to shoot him out of rage and jealousy, believing that he was having an affair with Angel and the Badman co-star, Gail Russell.
Both John and Russell denied the claim. John, while talking about his marriage to Baur, said that their marriage was like shaking two volatile chemicals in a jar.
He also later claimed that Baur was a drunk and would fall down and blame him for pushing her.
They got separated in 1952 and divorced in 1954. Buar died in 1964 at the age of 40 due to a heart attack.
He then married Peruvian actress Pilar Pallete the same year as his divorce from Buar.
He met Pallete while he was looking for film locations in her home country.
The two reconnected years later after Pallete flew to America to dub the film in English.
Pallete later quit her acting job to look after their three children. However, the couple separated two decades later, but their divorce was never finalized.
