Jermaine Jakes

Jermaine Jakes is famous as the son of US preacher and founder of the Dallas megachurch The Potter's House, T. D. Jakes, and his wife, author, speaker, and visionary, Serita Jakes.

Serita also serves alongside her husband. He is a data entry specialist at T.D. Jakes ministries.

How did his parents meet?

His parents, T. D. Jakes and Serita, first met at the church. Then, 23-year-old T. D. visited her home church in Beckley, West Virginia, as a guest preacher. 

Serita fell for him as she watched him deliver the speech that was so captivating. 

During an interview with Called Magazine, she said that her husband was one of the people who really influenced her as a young convert because there weren't many young people most of the time at that time and in that generation. 

She was drawn to his ministry, but she didn't realize that it was also a softening of her heart to want a relationship, she expressed. Soon, they began dating. 

They initially maintained a long-distance relationship because T. D., at the time, was serving as the part-time pastor at Greater Emmanuel Temple of Faith based in Virginia. 

They married in 1981, a year and a half after meeting. In order to entertain their twins, Jermaine and Jamar, they would play games with them by candlelight.

The early struggle 

After they got married, they struggled to make ends meet for their growing family as T. D. started a full-time ministry, and the revivals at the time were few. 

Unable to afford diapers, they would use paper towels and duct tape. Their utilities were eventually cut. It started with phones, then water, and then electricity.

They were hit with a tragedy as they were involved in a car accident that ended up dislocating Serita's entire heel cap, and she was told she would never walk again. 

According to Serita, it was her husband, her pastor, and her friend who taught her how to walk again. 

T. D. also openly talked about how he helped her get through it. 

He said he cared for her, took care of her, cooked for her, washed her hair, and taught her how to walk. It also brought them together.

He once made a headline getting arrested for Indecent exposure

Jermaine made a headline back in 2009 after he got arrested for Indecent exposure.

According to the affidavit, Jermaine unzipped his pants and started m*sturbating while making eye contact with one of the two detectives at Kiest Park.

The detectives at the time were working undercover after the citizens had filed a complaint about the sexual activities taking place in the area. 

Jermaine walked directly toward them after they went after him, seeing him enter into the woods, the affidavit explained.

His sister got pregnant at the age of 13

Jermaine has four siblings, including his twin brother Jamar. 

He has two sisters, Cora Jakes Coleman and Sarah Jakes Roberts, and a brother, Thomas Jakes Jr. Both of his sisters are media personalities.

His sister Sarah got pregnant when she was just 13 years old. 

While appearing on an American daytime talk show, The Dr. Phil Show, back in 2014 to talk about her book Lost &Found, she shared about her personal struggles and how her parents discovered her pregnancy.

Sarah said she didn't tell her parents, but her sister told them in an anonymous letter and placed it in their mailbox. 

"But because we don’t actually receive mail to our home, my parents knew it was one of us, she told Phil. Sarah was not aware of the letter. 

According to Cori, she did so, thinking the benefits of her getting prenatal care outweighed the risk of them possibly losing their friendship at the time.

Sarah recalled returning home and her mother telling her about the letter. 

Her mother told her that they had got the mail that said she was pregnant, and the moment her mother told her, she broke down into tears. 

She remembered her parents remaining silent for a long time. 

“I know it may not be a big deal in most homes, but when your father speaks for a living, to render him speechless is quite the test,” she explained. 

They were extremely disappointed, and she believes that they grieve the dream that they would have for their daughter. 

It was a process, and once they got through it, they started looking at the practical matters of it, including health care, school, and education.

She also said that having sex was her conscious decision, though it was against the ministry, explaining that just because her parents are preaching about pre-marital sex and teen sex, she doesn’t have to live by it. 

”Everyone has their own journey, and that’s the reality of it that we all find out on our own,” she added.
