Jeremy Doku

Jeremy Doku is a professional footballer who plays as a forward for Ligue 1 club Rennes and the Belgium national team.

Doku was born in Belgium and is of Ghanaian descent.

Who are his parents?

He was born to Ghanaian parents, father David Doku, and mother Belinda Doku. He grew up alongside his brother and two sisters in Borgerhout. 

According to the sources, his father was an athlete. The place where they were raised was unsafe as it was associated with poverty, crime, and human trafficking.

Doku’s parents, in an interview, claimed that their son was close to signing Liverpool in 2018 as a successor to Sadio Mane. 

Doku’s father, David, told how Liverpool boss Klopp explained seeing the potential in Jeremy to succeed Sadio Mane and tried convincing him to join Liverpool.

At the age of 16, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Ajax, and PSV were interested, and they visited the clubs like Liverpool and Ajax, he said. 

David’s preference at the time was Liverpool. Despite that, Doku opted to stay with his boyhood club Anderlecht. 

David revealed that former Anderlecht general manager Herman Van Holsbeeck did everything possible not to let Doku go. 

They got smart with the video from Romelu Lukaku, where he said it was better to break through in Belgium first and then leave through the main gates. 

Holsbeeck succeeded as Jeremy hesitated to leave.

Doku says he has no regrets if anyone asks him if he regrets it because he believes that if Liverpool came to him at 15 and if they liked him, they would certainly come back later.

He is included in Belgium’s final 26-man squad for FIFA World Cup

Doku has been included in Belgium’s final 26-man squad for FIFA World Cup that is going to be held in Qatar. 

He made his first appearance for the national team on the 5th of September in the 2020 UEFA Nations League against Denmark. 

Just after three days, he scored his first goal for the national team in a 5-1 victory over Iceland.

Suffered a string of injuries

Doku has suffered a string of injuries since last season that kept him out of the bench most of the time. 

His latest injury is a blow for the 20-year-old, said Rennes’ manager Bruno Genesio. Doku has gotten into a vicious circle, which is mentally difficult for him. 

He added that he gets injured, comes back, gets playing time, then gets injured again and has to start from. 

In a previous interview, Doku said that to avoid injury, some habits in daily life had to be changed, such as sleeping earlier, eating differently, and trying to change everything. 

He also questions himself about what he can do to avoid injury. Injured once, ok, two or three times, no. 

He added that if you want to play football at a very high level, you have to do it.
