She is currently in her ninth marriage
O'Neill is currently with her eighth spouse, a music producer, Mervin Sidney Louque Jr., whom she married in 1996.
Prior to marrying him, she was married eight times, two times with her sixth husband, Richard Alan Brown.
O'Neill was 17 when she married her first husband, Dean Rossiter, in 1965. They got divorced after six years of marriage.
In an interview with the New York Times, she admitted to being in a hurry when she married Rossiter and wouldn't recommend any other 17-year-old girl to marry.
She then married for the second time to Joseph Roster in 1972 but her marriage to him only lasted for two years.
Following her divorce from Roster in 1974, she married an Emmy-award-winning television producer, Nick De Noia.
Still, she divorced a year later, after which she married for the fourth time to pop music singer-songwriter Jeff Barry from 1978-1979.
She then married her fifth husband, John Lederer, from 1979-1983. Three years later, she married Richard Alan Brown.
It lasted for three years. Her seventh marriage to Neil L. Bonin in 1992 was annulled.
She then remarried her sixth husband, Richard Alan Brown, in 1993 but got divorced in 1996.
The same year, she married Mervin Louque Jr., with whom she is still together.
O'Neill, while talking about her ninth marriage to Mervin, said she knows she will be with him forever. With every single one, she was sure it was It.
With each marriage, it was almost like doing a new character and going on location, setting up a house with a new extended family and new stepchildren, she said.
And also that looking back she doesn't know how she did it but was so determined. She just wanted to be happy, to be loved.
Mother of three grown-up kids
O'Neill is the mother of three grown-up kids: a daughter, Aimee, and two sons, Reis and Cooper, who she shares with her first, fifth, and sixth husband, respectively.
She was just 19 when she had her first child, daughter Aimee, with her first husband, Dean Rossiter.
Following the birth of Aimee, she experienced unidentified depression, which at the time was unidentified.
She had also attempted suicide and went to the hospital for treatment, which included electro-shock therapy.
After her first failed marriage, she met a man with whom she got engaged to be married. She thought she was going to be with him forever.
She had a daughter, and he had four children.
She became pregnant with his child, but when she ran to him to share the good news, he looked up at her and gave an expression she didn't just recognize and asked her to abort the child.
She couldn't stand up to it, and abortion was performed. According to O'Neill, she deeply and profoundly hated herself for years after the abortion.
Her fifth husband, John Lederer, sexually abused Aimee, but she disbelieved her because he passed several lie detector tests.
During an interview back in 2019, reflecting on the abuse, she said she didn't know who to believe since he passed the lie detector test and that the allegations and abuse strained their relationship.
Still, when he remarried and did the same thing to the next teenage step-child, she realized he was just a masterful liar.
She also shared that she is now very close to her daughter as she understood how much she needed her to realize that she was telling the truth, and her daughter also understood that she had no clue.
She attempted suicide at the age of 14
O'Neill attempted suicide when she was 14, but it was not because she wanted to die but because she felt unheard by her parents.
In an interview, she said that her parents decided to move from the country to the city, which she couldn't stand.
"I didn't want to die. I just wanted to be heard", she said. Fortunately, she didn't die but was in a coma for two weeks.
"Nothing was ever understood, recognized, dealt with, or healed. What happens to people like me is that radical events get stuffed down, and they are never healed", she added.
