Some people labeled his mother as a gold digger for marrying his father, who was 50 years her senior
His parents, Tony Randall, and Heather Randall, met when his mother was working as an intern at the National Actors Theatre in New York, founded by his father.
In an interview, Tony said that since she was working as an intern and there were dozens of interns, he had not noticed her, but then they met again in 1994, and he thought he had overlooked it.
But it was Heather who proposed to him. Though Tony fell for her, he was hesitant because of his age.
Two years later, in 1995, they got married. Their marriage was officiated by an American politician and lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.
In an interview with Maire Claire, Heather said she was labeled a gold digger and recalled some women calling Tony an old fool.
She is sure people said and continues to say behind her back, but she doesn't hear most of it, she said at the time.
She also recalled reading a blog that said she inherited his fortune when he died, which was her aim.
Heather also said that sex was not a problem as she always imagined what it would be like going to Howard Stern Show because she knew his question would be what it is like to give an 80-year-old a blow job.
We had frequent sex until he went to the hospital. It was just a normal part of their married life, and it was happy, and they took care of each other, she explained.
He has a sister
Jefferson has an elder sister, Julia Laurette, who is one year older than him. His mother was 26 when she gave birth to Julia.
Tony became a father for the first time at the age of 77.
He had no children from his first wife, Florence Gibbs, his high school sweetheart to whom he was married from 1938 until her demise from Cancer in 1992.
Both Julia and Jefferson are following in their father's footsteps. They both are in the showbiz industry. Julia is an actress.
His father passed away when he and his sister were very young
His sister Julia was seven, and he was six when their father passed in 2004 at the age of 84.
He sadly died in his sleep at NYU Medical Center because of complications from a long-term illness. Their mother was just 33 when she became a widow.
Heather shared that Tony was an incredibly loving father and a great provider and desperately wanted them since he couldn't have any kids with his first wife.
What led his father into acting?
Tony was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to his parents, Moescha Rosenberg, an art and antique dealer, and Julia.
When he was six years old, they moved to Flushing, New York, and then to Manhasset, where they lived until he was 14.
Then his parents divorced, and he and his mother returned to Tulsa, where he finished both his junior high and high school.
After finishing high school, he went to Northwestern University, where he studied speech.
According to Tony, at that time, everybody from the part of the world who were interested in theater attended Northwestern University.
After a year at the University, the head of the University theater recommended he go to an acting school, and he agreed to go to Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, where he studied under Martha Graham and Sanford Meisner.
That was what made a difference in his life.
It was two years of training under Meisner, a very tough trainer. They had him every day, usually all morning long. He was 18 years old at the time.
Tony said in those two years, Meisner instilled in him the principles of acting, where they mostly worked on physical things.
Shortly after, he went to the stage but at the same time worked at a radio station because very few people made a living on the stage and would supplement their income with radio shows.
He worked as a radio announcer at a radio station WTAG in Worcester, Massachusetts, for a year.
He would go to New York every week on his day off in search of work.
He eventually found a job with Ethel Barrymore in the movie The Corn in Green, and from that, he got a job in The Skin of Our Teeth.
He was four years in the army before he started all over again.
