Jay Herdman

Jay Herdman is the son of Canada men’s national team head coach John Herdman. Herdman is in his father’s footsteps. 

He is a professional soccer player who plays as an attacking midfielder for Vancouver Whitecaps 2.

Qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 

Herdman opted to represent his birth country New Zealand though he is also eligible to play for England and Canada through his parents and residency, respectively. 

He said he doesn’t think he is Canadian. His parents are British, and it’s New Zealand for him. 

He was called up to the Canada U-20 training camp in April 2022. He represented Canada in a couple of unofficial friendly matches against Costa Rica. 

Talking about his experience with Canada, he said it was a good experience and was good to try it out. 

He knows a lot of boys on the team, but he has aspired to play for New Zealand since childhood.

Herdman made his debut for the New Zealand U20 in September 2022 after being called up in the New Zealand U20 squad for the 2022 OFC U-19 Championship in August, where he scored against Costa Rica in an 8-0 victory. 

New Zealand won the OFC U-19 championship and qualified for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

His parents are high school sweethearts

His parents, John and Clare Herdman, are childhood sweethearts. 

His father was just 16 when he first met his mother, and since then, she has been accompanying him throughout his journey traveling around the world. 

Jay also has a sister named Lily Herdman.

His father, John Herdman, who guided Canada to its first World Cup appearance in 36 years after a 4-0 victory over Jamaica, was once a primary teacher back in North East England. 

He is the first manager to lead a team to both men’s and women’s World Cup. 

Because he didn’t play at the highest level, he had always been told that he would never coach at the highest level and that he being a women’s coach, would never coach in the men’s game, would not qualify for the World Cup and so on and the only mission of his journey has been to bring that pioneer mindset to forefront recognizing that we can make all pioneer in our lives to be the first things. 

How does his father establish trust with the players?

During an interview with TSN, when asked about how he establishes trust with the players, he said there are many layers involved in establishing trust with players, but the simple part of it is to create safety to get trust. 

For him, safety is people realizing that you are real and that you are human, not superhuman, and realizing that you do not have the answers to all the questions like they expect all the answers from the leaders. 

According to him, his players have seen him both at his best and his worst, and as soon as he shows them that he does not have the answer, they start to realize that it’s ok. 

Safety is the starting point and the biggest thing from where the trust forms. 

And then it’s a common purpose that all need to figure out and have that common purpose which is the foundation of trust which binds them together. 

It is a process that takes time with individuals; many people are not prepared to take that time in sports. 

Besides that, he also explained the number of sacrifices and the challenges they made and took when they were asked to play on the pitch in the height of the Covid where if they lost the game, their dream of World Cup was over in just 90 minutes. 

Their loved ones were telling them why they were doing that during that Covid time, perceiving that they were risking both life and their career. 

It was a lot of mental and emotional journey.
