Jatavia Shakara Johnson, commonly known as JT, is a rapper. She is famous for City Girls, a hip-hop duo consisting of her and Yung Miami.

She felt like she was the black sheep of the family 

JT described her childhood to be a crazy one. Her father was a drug dealer, so they never went shortage of money. 

He had 16 kids, but she always felt like she was the black sheep in her family or wasn't treated fairly because her father hated her mother. 

So, growing up, she never got her parents' love. 

According to her, she lived with her father and stepmom despite feeling like the family's black sheep because her mother was always on drugs and in and out of prison. 

Since she didn't get any attention at home, she would act out all the time while at school to get the attention that would result in getting her ass whooped all the time. 

When she was 13, she stopped living with her father in Opa-Locka and went on to live with her aunt and cousins in Liberty City.

JT said that her mother is now clean and in a good situation and that she takes care of her no matter what she does in her life.

The formation of City Girls

JT and Yung Miami met in middle school while living in Miami. JT was interested in rapping and did freestyle on roads and every time killed it, but she was too shy. 

She wanted to do the songs but not alone, so she asked her cousins and everybody else before finally asking Yung Miami. 

According to Yung Miami, JT called her and asked her to do a song with her, and she was surprised because she had never rapped before. 

JT finally convinced her, but they didn't know about the studio, so Yung called the rapper Iceberg. 

They recorded their first song, "Fuck dat Nigga" which was a diss track towards their ex-boyfriends. The song took off pretty fast.

They started getting more attention after they were featured as uncredited guests in Drake's hit single "In My Feelings" in 2018. 

Eleven months after releasing their first song as City Girls, they signed a record deal with Quality Control Music and Capitol Records and later released their debut mixed tape, “Period,” and two other studio albums Girl Code and City On Lock.

She was behind bars for more than a year

A week after they recorded their first song, JT got indicted and charged with aggravated identity theft. 

JT said she didn't know she was in jail for the longest. She knew she was going to federal jail but didn't know what she was in for. 

She recalled calling Yung Miami and telling her that she didn't think she was getting out, and she said to her that their song was taking off. 

Yung Miami, in a podcast, said when JT was in jail, she thought she should push the song because it was doing great and everybody was listening to their song. 

She promoted the song via social media and paid DJs to play it in the clubs.

JT was sentenced to 24 months in Federal jail, but the judge later agreed to push back her surrender date. 

She began her jail sentence while being held at FCI Tallahassee and was later transferred to a halfway house in Atlanta, where she was able to leave the house and meet her friends and family. 

She was officially released from federal custody in March 2020.

JT is currently relationship with her rapper boyfriend, Lil Uzi Vert. 

While appearing on the Angie Martinez podcast, she gushed about her boyfriend, calling him a great man despite whatever the Internet tries to paint him. 

She added that he is always smiling and hard-working, and she feels lucky to have him. 

She also said his never giving up attitude, no matter what, inspires her a lot.
