Jackson Irvine is an Australian-born professional footballer who has been a midfielder for 2. Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli and also for the national team of Australia.
The reason behind his decision to play for his native country
Irvine was eligible to play for Scotland from his father’s side, born in Aberdeen.
He even represented Scotland at the under-19 international level before switching to Australia in September 2012 and made his debut for the Australia under-20 team in a friendly match against Portugal in October.
During an interview with Daily Record back in 2012, he admitted having to choose between Socceroos over Scotland was a tough decision.
He said he spent the majority of his young life watching Socceroos and grew up wanting to play for Australia.
Still, at the same time, he also always had a massive connection with the Scottish side of his family, and it was a great honor for himself and his family to get picked up by Scotland.
“I didn’t regret it all, but when it came down to it, I wanted to play for the Socceroos. That’s where my allegiances lie, but it was a very hard decision.
He added,
"I want to play with both, but that’s not how it works, so I have to play for Australian.”
Irvine spoke for gay rights and feels World Cup is an opportunity not to be wasted
Irvine has family and friends who are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and has been seeing them marginalized and discriminated against for a very long time.
He felt the urge to speak his heart out regarding gay rights, about which he has been speaking up for the last few years, but he feels collective action is always more powerful than individual action.
Irvine says homophobia in the football world still exists, and the toxic masculine atmosphere that football, unfortunately, has sometimes doesn’t make people from the gay community feel welcome and part of the game.
He urges for the change which, according to him, is most needed. Irvine also says he has seen a huge change in the last few years.
He thinks players have a big role to play in making information available, and speaking up is going to play a massively important part, which he has had to do on some occasions during his career when he has heard homophobic language and has found the response to be generally receptive.
He believes World Cup is a global platform, an opportunity not to be wasted because there is a lack of clarity and a feeling the LGBTQIA+ will be unwelcome at the global tournament and hopes to see collective action at the World Cup because playing on the biggest stage, in the biggest tournament in the sport raises the platform and the attention on individual players and footballers as a collective to speak about issues that matter.
His secondary passion behind football is a guitar
Guitar has been the secondary passion behind football.
Though he didn’t have a musical background, he got inspired by the music that his parents played, which helped him to get into the musical path quite early.
He was very interested in toy guitars when he was quite young and used to love pressing the buttons and hearing sounds.
His mom recognized that he was very responsive to that and handed him a guitar when he was four.
According to Irvine, he played loads of different bands in high school, and it was constant.
He did music group performances as a subject at school as well, so they were doing it at an academic level aside from playing for fun.
His guitar heroes growing up were Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Prince and he dreamt of a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
Relationship status
Irvine is currently in a relationship with his girlfriend named, Jemilla.
During an interview with The Scotsman, he mentioned his girlfriend Jemilla while describing his tattoo, where he said he did a lot of tattoos by himself.
He and his girlfriend, after finishing Netflix, decided to tattoo each other during a lockdown. He also said he pierced his ears.
It is not known when they started dating, but the couple is relishing their time together. Jemilla is yet to become his wife.
