Matjaz began his career as a football player with the Maribor youth team and then moved to Zeleznicar Maribor.
He started his senior career with Zeleznicar Maribor in 1979 and played with the team for a year.
He then returned to Maribor in 1980 and played with the club for five years. He played for Spittal/Drau from 1985 to 1988, and for GAK from 1988 to 1995.
He again returned to Maribor in 1995 and hung his boot with the club in 1999.
He played in the position of defense, and centre-back. He also represented his country Slovenia on an international level in 1992.
He began his managerial career with his home club, Maribor. He joined the club as an assistant manager for one season.
He became the head coach of the club in March 2000. He became the interim manager of the club in 2001.
He again took charge of Maribor for two years i.e., 2002 to 2004. He also worked as the head coach of Slovenia U15 in 2006 and Slovenia U16 from 2006 to 2007.
He was the head coach of the Slovenia national team from 2007 to 2011.
Matjaz became the head coach of Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad on December 20, 2011, but was sacked in less than two months.
He then became the head coach of Rijeka on February 27, 2013. He had worked with the club for more than a year without a contract.
He resigned from the club on October 6, 2018, after becoming the longest-serving manager by single appointment in the history of the Croatian First Football League.

Matjaz led Slovenia to Euro 2024
Matjaz has been managing the Slovenia national team since 2018. Slovenia failed to secure a spot in UEFA Euro 2020 after losing both matches against Austria.
He then led Slovenia to finish first in group three of the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League C and get promoted to League B.
However, Matjaz led the Slovenia national team to secure their spot in Euro 2024. Slovenia qualified for the Euro for the first time in 24 years.
Slovenia directly qualified for the Euro finishing second in the group, first being Denmark, after defeating Kazakhstan by 2-1.
