Francis Antetokounmpo

Francis Antetokounmpo is famous as the older brother of a Greek-Nigerian professional basketball player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is currently playing for the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA.

Both of his parents were athletes

Both of his parents were athletes. His parents, Charles Antetokounmpo and Veronica Antetokounmpo, emigrated to Greece from Nigeria, leaving Francis under his grandparents' care. 

His other four younger brothers, Thanasis, Giannis, Kostas, and Alex, were born in Greece. 

Francis's father had been a soccer player in Nigeria while his mother was a high jumper. 

Since his parents emigrated without work permits, it was challenging to make ends meet, so Giannis and his older brother used to help his parents sell watches, CDs, and DVDs on the streets. 

They lived in 250 square feet apartment. The time was indeed challenging, but they had one another, Giannis said in an interview with ESPN.

He followed in his father’s footsteps

Unlike his other four siblings, who chose basketball as their professional career, he chose to follow in his father’s footsteps. 

He pursued his career as a pro soccer player and spent most of his time playing in Nigerian and Grecian leagues before his retirement.

His brother Thanasis is also an NBA player. Like Giannis, he also plays for the Milwaukee Bucks. 

His other brother, Kostas, plays for Panathinaikos of the Greek Basket League and Euro League. 

His youngest brother Alex last played for Wisconsin Herd of the NBA G League.

He is also a musician

Francis is also a musician. He goes by the name Ofili and released his official debut single, “Shekosi,” in 2020.

Established a foundation in honor of their late dad

Giannis never fails to credit his family for the success he has achieved. 

"I wouldn't be in the position I am sitting in today without my family. Without the sacrifices that my parents made every single day to provide for us, to put us in the position, to have an opportunity to go out there and accomplish our goals and dreams in life, I wouldn't be here without them, Giannis said while appearing on The Today Show to talk about the Charles Antetokounmpo Foundation, the foundation he and his brothers started to honor their late father who passed away back in 2017 due to a heart attack. 

They started the foundation with the aim of providing aid to others to achieve their dreams, which focuses on three different places: Milwaukee, Nigeria, and Greece. 

Giannis said his father had no money. 

He was poor, but he and his brothers were his legacy, so growing up, he felt like his father was the richest person in the neighborhood because his father always felt he was rich because he had his sons. 

So, they decided as a family to come together and build the foundation to do basically what people did for them.

Giannis said he and his brothers are super close to each other and try to protect each other as much as they can, and that was how they were raised by their parents. 

"If one don't eat, nobody eats", he said. 

According to him, his older brother Thanasis had a lot of pressure because their father was always behind telling him to protect his younger brothers. 

They were raised to be together, and that is the reason his family has been that way.
